More than 732 million doses of Johnson & Johnson (J&J), Pfizer & BioNTech, and Modern’s vaccines have been administered in the US. Pfizer became the first company to receive emergency use authorization for their vaccine on 11 December 2020, followed shortly by Moderna on 18 December. Johnson and Johnson’s vaccine, Janssen was approved in late February and is the only single-shot vaccine available in the US.

The number of vaccine doses distributed by Pfizer and Modern severely outpace that of the J&J for two reasons.

The first being that they have been available since December, whereas the distribution of the J&J vaccine, Janssen, did not begin until March. The second relates to the pause in the use of the Janssen vaccine in April after a series of rare blood clots were identified and investigated. These two factors combined with the fact that the Pfizer and Modern versions require two doses allowed them to quickly outpace other options. The US has yet to approve the vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford Univerisity, so no doses have been given out to the public yet.

Which vaccine is favored by the public?

The clinical trials of both Pfizer and Moderna’s vaccine showed more than 90% effectiveness in preventing infection of covid-19. Jansen also received high marks, around 70% efficacy, which is much closer to other vaccines on the market. These findings, and the public image associated with the companies, have made Pfizer and Moderna’s vaccine more sought after in the US. However, all vaccines available have been proven extremely effective in reducing transmission, hospitalizations, and death.

What percent of the public in the US has been vaccinated?

With over 308 million people having received one or two doses of covid vaccines in the US, 64% of the adult population is partially vaccinated and 54% are fully protected against the virus.

The president is aiming to have at least seventy percent of the adult population vaccinated by the Fourth of July. Just six points away from the President’s target, the country is not on track to vaccinate enough people to meet the goal. The country would need to vaccinate three times as many people over the age of eighteen each day through Independence Day to meet the goal.

What states have met the target?

Fifteen states have met the target:

  • Vermont -- 83.9%
  • Hawaii -- 82.2%
  • Massachusetts -- 80.7%
  • Connecticut  -- 77.6%
  • New Jersey -- 76.7%
  • Maine  -- 76.3%
  • Rhode Island -- 74.2%
  • Pennsylvania -- 73.7%
  • New Mexico  -- 73.3%
  • Maryland -- 72.7%
  • California  -- 72.4%
  • New Hampshire -- 71.9%
  • Washington -- 71.9%
  • New York -- 70.4%
  • Washington DC -- 70.3%

Which states are the furthest from meeting the target?

Mississippi (45.1%), Alabama (47%), Louisiana (47.3), and Wyoming (48.4%) are the only states where less than half the adult population has received a least one shot of a covid-19 vaccine.
