More than 732 million doses of Johnson & Johnson (J&J), Pfizer & BioNTech, and Modern’s vaccines have been administered in the US. Pfizer became the first company to receive emergency use authorization for their vaccine on 11 December 2020, followed shortly by Moderna on 18 December. Johnson and Johnson’s vaccine, Janssen was approved in late February and is the only single-shot vaccine available in the US.

The number of vaccine doses distributed by Pfizer and Modern severely outpace that of the J&J for two reasons.

The first being that they have been available since December, whereas the distribution of the J&J vaccine, Janssen, did not begin until March. The second relates to the pause in the use of the Janssen vaccine in April after a series of rare blood clots were identified and investigated. These two factors combined with the fact that the Pfizer and Modern versions require two doses allowed them to quickly outpace other options. The US has yet to approve the vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford Univerisity, so no doses have been given out to the public yet.

However, all vaccines available have been proven extremely effective in reducing transmission, hospitalizations, and death.
