What are all the events and sports at the Olympics?
There will be a total of 33 sports at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo this summer, five of which will feature for the first time.
Following last year’s postponement due to the coronavirus, excitement is building ahead of the 29th edition of the modern Olympic Games, which get underway in Tokyo, Japan on 24 July.
More than 11,000 athletes from 206 nations will compete in Japan this summer across a total 33 sports, five of which will feature at the Olympics for the first time.
These five new sports, baseball/softball, karate, skateboarding, surfing and sport climbing, will join the five sports that have been contested at every summer Olympic Games since 1896: athletics, cycling, fencing, gymnastics and swimming. Of the three sports that debuted at Rio 2016, rugby sevens and golf will return for Tokyo 2020, while kitesurfing has been dropped.
Olympic Games kick off with football and softball
While the opening ceremony will take place on the Friday evening at Tokyo’s New National Stadium, several football and softball matches will be played before the torch is lit on Wednesday 22 July due to the length of those events, while archery and rowing will start earlier on the day of the inauguration event.
The men’s marathon final, the women's gold medal basketball game, the women's gold medal volleyball match, several men and women’s boxing finals, several track cycling men and women’s finals, the rhythmic gymnastics group all-around final, and the men's water polo gold medal match will take place on the day of the closing ceremony on 8 August.
2020 Olympics: Athletics gets underway July 30
As always, the athletic events will get underway in the second week, starting on Friday July 30 with the men's 3000m steeplechase round 1, men's high jump qualifying round, men's discus throw qualifying round, women's 800m round 1, men's 400m hurdles Round 1, and women's 100m Round 1.
The women’s 100m final and men’s 100m final will take place on Saturday 31 July and Sunday 1 August, respectively. The men's football gold medal match will be on Saturday 7 August, while the men’s basketball final will also take place Saturday 7 August.
