EUROCOPA 2020

UEFA clarify why Cristiano still leads Golden Boot board

The Portuguese ace also has an assist which would allow him to beat Schick even though both are on five goals. Sterling, Kane and Dolberg are all on three.

Even though his team were knocked out of Euro 2020 by Denmark, Czech Republic striker Patrik Schick managed to get on the scoresheet during the game to take his personal tally to five - level with Cristiano Ronaldo. However, the Portuguese star remains on course to win the Gold Boot award despite having scored the same amount of goals as Schick - that is unless another player still in the tournament manages to score six...

UEFA explained the procedure for determining who ends as the tournament's top scorer in case two or more players end on the same number of goals. Schick ended Euro 2020 with five goals, including one from the penalty spot. Cristiano also finished on five goals - three of them were penalties, but he also gave an assist, setting up Diogo Jota in the 2-4 defeat to Germany.

In the goals table, other scorers are close but their teams have been eliminated - France's Karim Benzema, Sweden's Emil Forsberg and Belgium's Romelu Lukaku all ended on four goals. There are three players who could have a chance of matching or overtaking Cristiano as they remain in the competition. Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane (England) and Denmark's Kasper Dolberg are on three goals and could add to their tallies in the semi-final and final.

European championship top scorers of all-time

It is the first time that two players have been tied on five goals in the European championships since the 2000 edition, when Patrick Kluivert and Savo Milosevic both hit that figure. Other players who have scored five goals or more during the Euros include: Michel Platini (9, 1984), Marco van Basten (5, 1988), Alan Shearer (5, 1996) Milan Baros (5, 2004) and Antoine Griezmann (6, 2016).
