Anelka urges Mbappé to leave PSG
Writing in The Athletic on Monday, former Paris Saint-Germain striker Nicolas Anelka told Kylian Mbappé that he must think about leaving the Ligue 1 club if he is to emulate the impact Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have had on the game.
"You will have to decide," Anelka said in a letter to Mbappé. "If you want to win the Ballon d'Or, which is what you should be looking at to echo Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, you will have to compete with the best.
"You can't say you compete with the best all the time when you are at PSG. The French league is not easy, don't get me wrong, but I think the toughest league is in England.
"So, if you want to be one of the best, then do what you do in Paris but with Chelsea or United or Arsenal or Manchester City or Liverpool. Or go to Spain to Madrid or Barcelona. Or maybe Italy. Then we can speak about a more global impact."
According to reports in France (first L'Équipe, and then Radio Monte Carlo), Kylian Mbappé has informed PSG that he will not renew his contract with the club, which expires in June 2022. It is not a direct invitation to be transferred this summer, as Mbappé has explained to the Ligue 1 club that he will serve out the remaining year of his contract, but it certainly puts PSG in a tricky position: they must now decide whether to risk letting him leave for free in a year's time or take a big fee for one of their star players now.
