Netherlands 2(2) - 2(4) USWNT: as it happened

Well, that's it from us today, we'll see you for the semi-finals! Thanks for joining!

Well, quite.

What a game! The US are into the semi-finals at the Olympics where they will face Canada. And how costly that Martens miss from the spot in normal time was. She may well have been the fifth taker for the Dutch as well.

Rapinoe, who else, to send the US through... and it's blasted into the top corner! The US go through on penalties!

Aniek Nouwen now... and Naeher saves!

Christen Press... and it's there! Nice and easy from the forward, wrong-footing the keeper to make it 3-2!

Stefanie van der Gragt for the Dutch... what a goal! Struck with venom and in off the post! That's 2-2!

Alex Morgan steps up for the US... and scores! Left-footed into the same side! 2-1 to the US!

Dominique Janssen next up... and its placed into the corner! 1-1!

Rose Lavelle... scores! 1-0 USA!

Saved! What a stop from Naeher!

Netherlands first up... Miedema.

Morgan and Press both missed in that shoot-out, with Horan and Lloyd finding the net.

The US do not have fond memories of the last Olympic shootout they were involved in in 2016, when Sweden won from the spot.

120+1

Morgan drives into the area but is bundled off the ball by two defenders and the whistle goes! Penalties will decide this one!

120

One minute remaining...

118

Corner for the US as the Dutch defence nick the ball off Press' boot. It's cleared but sent back in by Dahlkemper, a first-time Horan effort flashing wide.

117

Rapinoe! A nice run and a little shuffle to get the ball on her left opens up the opportunity but she blasts over.

116

Morgan is hanging on the shoulder of the last defender now looking for another opening like that last one.

114

But again the eye in the sky says no! Morgan shakes her head in disbelief.

113

Morgan again and this time it's in after a terrible mix-up at the back but again the flag is up... this one is not as clear cut though.

112

Morgan! She thought she'd done enough there but just failed to make contact with an excellent Rapinoe cross.

110

VAR rather pointlessly checks it anyway...

109

Press has the ball in the net, as she often does against the Netherlands, but that one won't stand as she was well offside.

107

The Netherlands break and Miedema meets a cross but can only place a tame header wide.

106

Morgan turns and shoots, earning a corner.

105

The US get the ball rolling for the final 15!

105

Crystal Dunn comes on for the US.

105+2

And there's the whistle! The Netherlands will feel they should maybe have capitalized on their dominance there and were denied by VAR, like the US in regulation time.

105+2

Beerensteyn! Just over from a snap shot by the Bayern forward.

105

Two minutes added.

104

Goal kick to the US and Naeher is taking her time. The Netherlands have taken this mini-half on points and the US have barely been out of theirs.

102

Naeher! What a save! Miedema thought she'd scored there but the US keeper makes a spectacular stop.

100

Groenen and Morgan get into a tangle with the US star coming off worse, but she's ok to continue.

98

Rapinoe! The OL Reign forward takes out two defenders but can only find the side netting with her effort.

96

It's ruled out for offside! 2-2 it remains in Yokohama.

96

And still we wait...

94

Martens has the ball in the net and to VAR we go!

93

Corner to the Dutch as Beerensteyn is bundled off the ball. The Bayern Munich forward has been a thorn in the US' side.

92

Miedema again! The Arsenal forward forces a stop out of Naeher after excellent work from Van de Donk.

91

We're back underway as Miedema buys a yard on the edge of the area and fires over.

90+5

And that's the whistle! To extra time we go!

90+4

Rapinoe delivers but it's not her finest effort and goes straight out for a goal kick.

90+3

The US have a free kick out on the right as Van de Donk clatters into O'Hara. They'll send everyone up for this...

90+2

It's end to end now with both sides wanting to avoid extra time! Will anyone make the breakthrough?

90

Five minutes added!

88

Close! Rapinoe breaks on the left and her cross is met by Press, whose clipped shot flashes wide!

86

Beerensteyn is now down after an excellently timed challenge from Naeher to deny her a clear sight of goal after a nice ball into the area.

85

Close! Beerensteyn twists and turns on the edge of the area and tees up Van de Donk, whose heder just misses the far post!

82

Jill Roord with an effort from the edge of the area that inches wide. The Netherlands look keen to end this in normal time.

It was a decent enough strike by the Barça forward but the US keeper made her commitement and was rewarded with a solid save to her left!

80

Martens steps up... and Naeher saves!

79

Penalty! The Dutch have a spot kick after Beerensteyn is floored in the area!

76

First caution of the game as Horan chops down Van de Donk in midfield.

73

Corner for the US as Wilms plays it safe and knocks a dangerous looking ball out of play.

70

Van der Gragt is down after a mid-air collision with Morgan and the players grab some hydration as we enter the last 20 minutes in Yokohama.

67

A glorious chance for the Dutch as Beerensteyn's drag-back clips a US boot and forces Naeher into a smart stop at her near post.

65

After an extremely lengthy VAR check Christen Press' effort is ruled out for offside.

64

In the meantime Megan Rapinoe comes on the for the US.

63

The US have the ball in the back of the net again and its going to VAR...

62

The Dutch make a change now as Van de Sanden makes way for Lineth Beerensteyn.

59

The Dutch try to work an opening through Van de Sanden and Martens but the US shut up shop and break forward, giving Van Veenendaal a bit more work.

56

Double change for the US as Rose Lavelle and Alex Morgan come on.

53

Gooooooooooool! It's Miedema again! She can't miss! The forward turns Abby Dahlkemper and drills a low shot into the corner!

50

Free kick for the Dutch now, it's an excellent delivery and falls to Van de Donk on the edge of the area but the number 10's shot doesn't trouble Naeher.

48

Good cover from Aniek Nouwen to deny the onrushing Lloyd.

46

We're back underway!

And there's the half! Goals from Mewis and Williams send the USWNT in at half time 2-1 up after Miedema opened the scoring.

45+1

A dangerous attempt to claim a cross almost lands kindly for Williams but the bounce doesn't favour her.

45

Two minutes added

43

Horan sends in a low cross but Van Veenendaal is down to cover.

42

Miedema! It's a decent header but a routine save for Naeher.

41

Van de Sanden wins a corner as the Dutch apply some pressure of their own.

38

The US are emplying a high press and the Dutch seem to have little answer to it as the leaders carve out another blocked shot and a half chance after nicking back possession.

34

The Netherlands are certainly rattled by that quick-fire double and the usually reliable Van de Sanden sends a cross straight out for a goal kick.

30

Goooooooool! What a turnaround! Williams laches on to a loose ball just inside the area and hammers past the keeper to make it 2-1!

29

Corner for the US as Heath's cross is sent behind.

Lynn Williams sends in a fizzing cross and Sam Mewis meets it at the near post to guide a header past Van Veenendaal!

27

Goooooooool! The US level!

24

Heath takes, looking for Horan's run, but the Portland midfielder can't get to it before it bounces over the byline.

23

Free kick to the US on the edge of the area as Lloyd is floored.

21

Martens! It's a decent effort from the Barcelona striker but Naeher makes ther stop.

17

As you were! From the free kick the ball finds its way to Miedema on the edge of the area and the Arsenal forward makes no mistake, hitting a shot on the turn to take her Olympic tally to nine!

16

Free kick for the Dutch as Ertz is picked up for an arm in Lieke Marten's face. The Netherlands haven't offered much going forward yet.

14

What a save! The US bench was on its feet there, but Van Veenendaal gets down low to palm a Horan header onto the post!

12

Julie Ertz has half a chance at the far stick but her control lets her down. The flag was up on the far side anyway but the US are making inroads.

10

Tobin Heath with a glorious finish across the Dutch keeper, but the flag was up to deny the US forward.

The winners of this game have an opponent in the semi-finals now after Canada knocked out Brazil in a penalty shoot-out!

8

It's a training ground job as the delivery heads to the penalty spot but the Dutch clear with little fuss.

7

Corner for the US as Kelley O'Hara makes it to the byline and sees her attempt to hook it back into the area deflected.

5

Free kick to the Netherlands as Sam Mewis gets a chunk of Stefanie van der Gragt in the Dutch half.

3

The US are seeing more of the ball in the early exchanges but the Dutch are set up to hit on the break and look fairly comfortable at the back as their opponents search for an opening.

1

And we're off! Netherlands get the ball rolling!

And the Star Spangled Banner rings out across an empty stadium... we're about to get going!

The teams are out in Yokohoma and here we go with the anthems! Netherlands up first.

Looking at the team sheet for the game against Australia, Andonovski has switched out his entire forward line today. Fair enough, given they failed to score against the Matildas but Christen Press has found the net in her last two appearances against the Dutch.

Canada vs Brazil is one the USWNT will have an eye on as the winner of that game will face the winner of this game in the semi-finals.

Elsewhere in the quarters, GB are currently beating Australia 2-1, Canada and Brazil are deep into extra time after a 0-0 draw on the 90 and hosts Japan are level with Sweden in the first half at 1-1.

Netherlands starting XI confirmed

No real surprises from Sarina Wiegman, who will be looking to hit the US early through Martens and Miedema while controlling the ball in midfield through the hugely experienced Daniëlle van de Donk.

USWNT starting XI confirmed

Vlatko Andonovski has announced his starting line-up and both Morgan and Rapinoe start on the bench. Veteran Carli Lloyd will lead the line with support from Lynn Williams and Tobin Heath while Julie Ertz anchors the midfield.

USWNT seeking fifth Olympic Gold

That result was even more surprising given that the USWNT had won four of the past five Olympic tournaments and finished runners-up in 2000.

While the Netherlands largely cruised through the group stage, the US rather snuck through after requiring a draw against Australia in their final group encounter. That the final score was 0-0 suggested all is not well in Vlatko Andonovski's camp ahead of today's game amnd US stars such as Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan, the Mewis sisters and Lindsey Horan will need to be at their best today if the USWNT are not to suffer a similar fate to Rio 2016 when they went out at the same stage against Sweden.

Under normal circumstances the USWNT would probably go into this game as favourites but a 3-0 defeat against Sweden in the group stage brought their incredible run of unbeaten games to a halt. The Netherlands, meanwhile, stormed to the top of their group, scoring 21 times. Star strikers Lieke Martens and Vivianne Miedema banged in four and eight respectively, the latter already an Olympic record.

USWNT

Arguably the two strongest sides in the world are meeting in the last eight in Tokyo, in a repeat of the 2019 World Cup final in which the USWNT beat the Netherlands 2-0.
