Team USA 95 vs 81 Spain: scores, summary, stats, highlights | Tokyo Olympics
Team USA is on to the semifinals after defeating Spain in the opening knockout round of the Olympics. Kevin Durant was sensational, especially in the second half to carry his side to a game away from the gold medal match.
Game of runs in the opening half
Despite a fantastic start from Ricky Rubio, in which he scored 13 first quarter points, the American led by two going into the second. The lead was short-lived, as the Spaniards punched back, building an 11-0 run and climbing out to an 40-29 lead. That’s when Greg Popovic’s side woke up and went on a 14-3 to close out the first half level with Spain.
The US side hit just 4/18 threes in the first half, but Kevin Durant came out of the gates firing after the halftime break. He hit three quick deep balls, and Team USA suddenly led by double digits. The lead stretched out to as many as 16, but yet another run from the persistent Spaniards closed the gap to four points.
Tooo much USA late for Spain to handle
Team USA’s class rose to the surface in the fourth quarter, and it looked like Spain was tired of trying to play a game of keep up with the high flying Americans.
Kevin Durant was the top scorer for the winning side, dropping 29 points. Jayson Tatum had 13, many of which came in the final quarter to help close out Spain. Ricky Rubio was sensational, dare I say unstoppable, scoring 38 points in a losing effort.
Spain chase for the gold has ended, but USA must now wait for the winner of Australia vs Argentina to see who they will be facing in the next round.
