OLYMPIC GAMES

How many Olympic Games has France hosted?

France, the next venue for the Olympics in 2024, is no stranger to hosting the Summer Games. Although they did wait exactly a century to do it again.

France, the next venue for the Olympics in 2024, is no stranger to hosting the Summer Games. Although they did wait exactly a century to do it again.

France has long been a staple in the Olympic Games, and has consistently played a part in many of its historic moments. It began with its participation in the first modern Olympics in Athens in 1896.

France: Involved in all Games

Since that landmark event, there have been French athletes in all of the Summer Games, although in 1904 their lone participant also competed for an American team.

France is one of only five countries to have been represented at all the Summer Games. The rest are Greece, Australia, Great Britain, and Switzerland.

In 1900, Paris hosted the second Summer Games which lasted over five months, from May to October. This also marked the first time that female athletes got to compete in the Olympics.

The country then held the Summer Games again in 1924, and this time they lasted over four months. The concept of the Olympic Village was born in Paris, which all the Games have adopted since then.

France hosts first Winter Olympics

France seemed eager to play host that year, as the inaugural Winter Olympics of 1924 also took place in the country, this time in Chamonix.

In 1968, the Games were back in France, held in Grenoble, a flat city surrounded by mountains. The 1968 events were the first to be broadcast in full color.

Twenty four years later, in 1992, the Winter Games returned to the French Alps in Albertville. The city holds the distinction of hosting both the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games together for the very first time.

The Paris 2024 Olympics aim to make history as well by holding the first carbon-neutral Games, and the first gender-equal Games. With this participation, France takes the number two slot in most number of Olympic Games hosted with six (three Summer, three Winter), following the United States which has nine (including 2028).
