MLS All-Star Game 2021: First-ever All-Star competition between MLS and Liga MX

The rivalry continues as the best in Major League Soccer compete with the stars of Liga MX Wednesday night at Banc of California Stadium in LA, California.

Tonight’s All-Star Game will be a first of its kind with the rivals MLS taking on their counterparts Liga MX. Over the summer, the U.S. men’s national team beat their Mexican rivals. And in November, the two countries meet again in the World Cup Qualifying. The rivalry continues.

How were the All-Star players selected?

The selection process for the MLS All-Star Game is unique in that so many different heads have a say in who plays - from head coach Bob Bradley and MLS Commissioner Don Garber to fans and the media. There are 28 total players selected: 13 by a combined vote from fans, media, and players; 13 by play Bob Bradley; two by Don Garber.

As for Liga MX, the first 14 players selected were the winners and nominees of the Balón de Oro awards. Juan Reynoso (Cruz Azul) was chosen as the Liga MX head coach of the season. He chose 11 players, and the executive president of Liga MX, Mikel Arriola, chose one.

The game begins tonight at 9:30pm ET.
