At 36 years old, Cristiano Ronaldo continues to compete at the highest level both at the club and national level. If anyone was under any illusion that the Portuguese star was going to slow down this season as he approaches his 37th birthday, his return to Manchester United to help the club’s title ambitions, and his late double-goal heroics against the Rep. of Ireland to become record highest goalscorer in international football, are a clear indication that is not the case.

The key to the longevity and incredible physique of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, who has previously stated he could continue to play professional football into his 40s, is as much down to his diet as his stringent training regime. And when it comes to nutrition, Ronaldo employs professionals to ensure his diet is up to scratch.

Despite the fact that he has long been one of the highest-paid sportsmen in the world, Ronaldo’s diet those not revolve around expensive foodstuffs, as revealed by his former live-in chef, Giorgio Barone, who gave an insight into the United forward’s diet in an interview with the Sunday Mirror.

“There are no expensive foods,” Barone said. “But healthy foods. I use organic and natural foods – fish, chicken, veal, eggs, avocado, coconut oil and black rice. You have to take care of your body as if taking care of a Ferrari.”

The Italian chef, who lived with Ronaldo in Turin during his time at Juventus, explained that the 36-year-old striker’s diet focuses on lean protein dishes, whole grains and salads, while he tries to avoid sugars, fats and carbohydrates. And as evident by his viral actions at a Euro 2020 press conference this summer (see video above), Coca-Cola, of course, is a big “no-no”.

Another core feature of Ronaldo’s diet under the guidance of Chef Barone was coconut oil, which is understood to help burn fat and to improve cholesterol.

“I cook using coconut oil. It is also important to drink plenty of water – but purified. And drink a lot,” added Barone, who insisted that sufficient rest and eating at the right times were also key to Ronaldo’s fitness levels.

“Of course, it’s all combined with hard training. But rest is as fundamental as training and nutrition – including in the afternoon. And eating early in the evening, not late.”
