Browns the dark horse of the AFC?

The Cleveland Browns are looking to build upon last year's 11-5 season that saw them advance to the divisional round of the playoffs in 2020. The team that knocked them out of the playoffs was their opening day opponent, the Kansas City Chiefs.

Cleveland is widely considered one of the top contenders to challenge the Chiefs in the AFC this year, and they got an early test at the best in Week 1. The Chiefs have been to the AFC Championship game in each of the last two years.

Three TDs in three tries for Browns

Kansas City started slow in the rematch of last year’s playoff game, as Baker Mayfield and the Browns were scoring at will in the first half. Cleveland scored three touchdowns on their opening three drives of the game, and Mayfield was red hot from the start connecting on 13 of his 17 passes in the opening two quarters.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski was fearless in his play calling, going for, and converting two fourth down conversions that led to early touchdowns to give the visitors the advantage.  Nick Chubb scored two touchdowns to pace the Browns in the first half, as Jarvis Landry and Anthony Schwartz continued to find pockets in the secondary providing easy targets for Mayfield as Cleveland went to the break up 22-10.

Mahomes came out firing in 3rd Quarter

The second half painted a much different picture from the start. Mahomes and the Chiefs had a long, patient, methodical drive that showed the class and maturity of a former Super Bowl champ. It took 14 plays and over half of the third quarter, and ended with a Travis Kelce 11 yard TD reception.

A Chubb fumble just a few plays later turned the tide of the game and a once dead Arrowhead came to life. The subsequent Harrison Butker field goal closed the gap to two.

Just when it seemed like Cleveland were against the ropes, Mayfield led the Browns to a nine play 75 yard drive to take take the top off and let the steam out of what was a cauldron of a stadium in Kansas City.

Hill: 11 catches 195 yards

It didn’t take long to ignite the fans after the Browns score. Mahomes connected with Tyreek Hill on a 75 yard bomb to tighten the deficit back to two.

A muffed snap on a punt by an already sliding Cleveland team gave the Chiefs the ball and a chance to take the lead with just over eight minutes to go in the game. Mahomes needed just three plays to punch the ball into the end zone hooking up with Kelce for their second TD connection of the day.

Four TD day for Mahomes

The Browns had a chance at a last minute game winning drive after KC failed to covert on the two point conversion, but Mayfield was picked off by Mike Hughes with over a minute to go in the fourth.

Mahomes ended with 337 yards, three passing TDs and a rushing TD, while Hill grabbed 11 passes for 197 yards, and Kelce had two touchdowns including the game winner.

The Browns would love to be able to skip Week 1's every year and jump right in to Week 2. Opening day has not been kind to Cleveland in the last 17 years.

Baker Mayfield getting ready to square up against one of the top QBs in the league, Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs have been where the Brown are striving to get to for the last two years. They won the Super Bowl in 2019, and lost in the title game last year against Tom Brady's Tampa Bay Bucs.

The Browns, and their fans have been waiting years, maybe even decades for this feeling going into the start of the season, The feeling in Cleveland is they finally have a team that will compete not just in the division, but also for the conference and the Super Bowl.

Hello everyone and welcome to Arrownhead Stadium. Thanks for joining us for the Week 1 match up and rematch of last year's AFC divisional round matchup between the Chiefs and the Browns

The reigning AFC Champions get their season underway, seeking to make a third consecutive trip to the Super Bowl. The Kansas City Chiefs will host the rising stars out of the AFC North, the Cleveland Browns in a rematch of last year’s divisional round game. AS English will be keeping you up to date with live coverage, stats, scores and highlights from Arrowhead Stadium.

AFC runs through KC

For the last two years, the Kansas City Chiefs have been the dominant force in the American Football Conference, and with an offense that has proved nearly unstoppable and some key additions on the defensive end all signs point to the road to the Super Bowl running through KC.

The Cleveland Browns have, not so quietly, been building a team that they hope will be at the front of the pack with teams like the Chiefs and the Titans. The Browns clinched a playoff spot by snagging the final wild card spot with a win over the Steelers.

Rematch of last years AFC Divisional Round

These two sides met in the second round of the playoffs, and Cleveland gave the Chiefs everything they could handle. The Browns got off to a slow start last January, going down 19-3 in the opening half. A second half injury to Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes halted the offensive flow for the Kansas City, and allowed the Browns to make a comeback late in the game.

Back up quarterback Chad Henne put the game on ice with a scramble on 3rd and 14 to seal the game for the Chiefs and secure a second straight trip to the AFC Championship.

Browns secondary gets a make over

This year the Browns are certain to see more of Patrick Mahomes, just like Mahomes is certain to see a beefed up secondary that features cornerback Troy Hill and safety John Johnson and first round draft pick cornerback Greg Newsome.

Baker Mayfield is back und er center and will have some playoff experience under his belt after getting to a game away from the AFC Championship in 2020. Odell Beckham Jr. is back at full force after missing a big chunk of last year after tearing his ACL in Week 7 of last year.

Cleveland will be looking to incorporate plenty of Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt in the run game, as they hope to take some steam out of the potent Chiefs offense.

Mahomes and KC offense one of best in the league

Mahomes threw for almost 40 touchdowns last year, a quarter of those were to tight end Travis Kelce. And of course there is the KC big play threat Tyreek Hill, who had 15 touchdowns last year.

The Browns come into this season looking to make a statement and there would be no better way than to shock the Chiefs in Arrowhead in Week 1. Kickoff from Kansas City is set for 4:25 p.m. ET.
