The Unicode Consortium, the company that designs the characters and symbols we use when writing text on devices such as computers and smartphones, has officially unveiled Unicode 14.0 - a package that includes 37 all-new emojis.

Including skin tones, Unicode 14.0 update features over 100 emojis

These freshly-designed emojis include such new additions as ‘troll’, ‘biting lip’, ‘melting face’ and ‘heart hands’, and actually number 87 when the variety of skin tones available are taken into account.

On top of that, there are 25 new skin-tone variations for the existing 'handshake' image, taking the overall total of emojis introduced in Unicode 14.0 to 112.

According to Emojipedia, there are now a total of 3,633 Unicode-created emojis.

When will the new emojis be on my phone?

Although Unicode 14.0 has now been released, its emojis are not expected to appear on our smartphones until later in 2021 or early 2022.

Per Emojipedia, Android users may get them sooner than those with iOS devices, as - unlike Apple - Google no longer only offers emoji updates as part of general system updates.
