Club Brugge vs PSG: how it happened

On the whistle match report

Lionel Messi failed to provide Paris Saint-Germain with any sparkle as the Ligue 1 team's potent attacking trio lacked inspiration in a disappointing 1-1 draw at Club Brugge in their Champions League opener on Wednesday.

Making his first start for the French team, the Argentine forward hit the woodwork but was otherwise far from his brilliant best alongside the hugely disappointing Neymar and Kylian Mbappé, who set up Ander Herrera for PSG's first-half opener before being replaced injured after the break.

Brugge, who levelled before halftime through Hans Vanaken, were more aggressive and had the best chances against a PSG side lacking quality and defensive focus.

The result left PSG and Brugge trailing Group A leaders Manchester City by two points after the Premier League champions crushed RB Leipzig 6-3.

Today's Champions League has been crazy full of goals!! High-intensity...!!

Which game was your favorite?

'So proud!!' Brugge getting emotional

It's hard to think of a better way to describe that performance from the home side. They worked hard from the first to the last whistle and deserved something from their opening group game, and it could easily have been all three points.

As for PSG, that was not a good day in the office. There were glimpses yes, but they will have to improve a whole lot if they are to be a force this season. Mbappé's injury just added to their frustrations.

Match report to follow...

Goals: Vanaken (27'); Herrera (15')

UPDATE: GOOAAAAAAL!!... Real Madrid (1)- Inter (0)

Rodrygo has just scored what could be the victory goal for Real Madrid, 2 minutes before the referee blows the whistle marking the end of the game!

Peep, peep, peeeeeep! It's all over.

A brilliant chance is handed to Lang to break away from the halfway line. He stalls, hoping for support, and this allows the defence to regroup, and a desperate strike goes closer to the corner flag than the goal.

UPDATE: Man.City has gone crazy!! (6-3)

If Leipzig at some point had any chance of a come-back, all hope has vanished as Gabriel Jesus scored in minute 85!!

Two minutes to be added

Neymar isn't getting an inch of space as he attempts to dribble past Mata. He does get a corner though, but that is wasted.

Nice interplay wide on the right from Draxler and Achraf. The low cross from the defender is a good one but there is no one close enough to tap home. Actually Icardi was right there but completely missed the ball.

A moment of worry for the home crowd.

UPDATE: Var dissalowed a goal for Porto

Porto's goal at minute 85', which would have most-likely given the club a victory against Atletico Madrid, was dissalowed after checking the VAR

Sobol then Sowah get the ball into the PSG penalty box, trying to make something happen. Nothing yet but they've shown enough here to deserve at least a point.

Neymar nonsense

After his first half antics that went unnoticed, and a fairly invisible appearance tonight, the Brazilian has left in a late shoulder on Nsoki, with the ball well away.

The French 22-year old is not really fussed about the global stature of his guest and refuses to shake his hand.

UPDATE: Real Madrid- Inter and Atletico Madrid- Porto remain 0-0

Icardi gets a very decent chance but my expectation levels are pretty low these days when it comes to him. Wide of the post, as if I needed to waste digital ink on that!

Messi...over the bar!

The ball is played to him briskly centrally and just inside the opposition area. We've seen him stroke these situations home on more occasions than the digits on his Qatari paypacket...but tonight it's not happening.

The crowd enjoyed it though!

UPDATE: Goal for Man.City!! (5-3)

Cancelo manages to unleashed a strong shot from distance! Manchester city is not willing to give Leipzig a single chance!

Hah! No sooner does Balanta get booked than he has to go shoulder to shoulder with a dribbling Messi. The Colombian is much stronger though and eases the new PSG star away from his desired path.

Effort cannot be questioned here but Balanta will have to watch his step as we enter the closing stages.

UPDATE: Leipzig scores! (4-3)

Nkunku scores hat trick! Leipzig does not surrender, they battle till the end! Amazing game of Nkunku!!

Mendes is ON for Diallo as Poch tries to get his troops more on top here.

Lang has been a constant threat tonight and he's just tried to complete an excellent showing by striking a De Ketelaere dink mid-bicycle kick.

Just wide!

Lionel Messi is booked. Not the night he, or PSG, expected

UPDATE: Another one for Haller (Ajax 5-1 Sporting)

Haller's fourth goal has everyone going wild!

UPDATE: Liverpool makes stunning comeback! (3-2)

Henderson with a Gerrard-esque strike!

Neymar with a chance to burst free but an excellent tackle from Mata prevents him from getting away.

That is followed on the other side of the Brugge defence with a sliding challenge from Nsoki which is just as well timed.

A look of frustration comes over the face of Messi as a foul is called against him. That look is one we've seen rather a lot of over recent years in Spain... surely he won't be expecting this level of helpless pain to have followed him.

Not a nice tackle there from Lang.

UPDATE: Grealish scores Man. City's fourth goal

Euphoric fans lift from the stands as Jack Grealish define the game!

Neymar existence questioned

JJ asks the question that everyone must be thinking. His earlier antics aside, he really hasn't done much at all.

Kimpembe gives away a free-kick as his persistence to kick De Ketelaere eventually gets the whistle.

I have to say, I've been really impressed by the 20-year-old Belgian. Keep an eye on him and his blond locks.

The home side again pushing for the second goal and win a corner after good work from Lang. Nothing doing from that though.

VAR is checking for a handball after that Di Maria strike but decision, correctly, is to get on with things.

UPDATE: Haller's hat trick lengthens the distance for Sporting

The Sporting can't believe it!! After the Var dissalowed Sporting's goal in minute 50. They see all their opportunities vanishing after Haller scored for Ajax just a minute after!!

Messi has two attempts to get away from Sobol on the right touchline. The first he fails but you don't give this 'old' man a second.

He skips away and that space opens up a chance for Di Maria at the edge of the area. A plethora of black and blue shirts provide the necessary blocking requirement and it's cleared.

Oooh! Icardi's first involvement is to latch onto a perfect through ball.

The striker dallies and Nsoki gets a brilliant clearing touch in. Let's put that delay in shooting down to rustiness from the recently introduced Icardi.

Icardi ON, Mbappé OFF

Mbappé off

There was a scare with him in the first half and a further knock seems to be conclusive. He's headed off and there are some worried French faces.

More Brugge pressure as Hendry has an effort blocked by a defender. PSG yet to get going in this half.

Liverpool starts the second-half tying the game 2-2. The game is not over yet!

Some nice control around the back from Brugge straight from the kick-off, and it's Navas who's called into action first.

The tight angle was always against Lang but he's won a corner.

We're off! Brugge get things going

Draxler and Danilo ON for Wijnaldum and Paredes

Here come the players, and it looks as though Pochettino has some changes in mind from the off...

Although a piece of magic was always possible, especially from the boot of a new Argentine in Paris, the break arrived when Brugge seemed the most likely to score next.

Let's see what the second half has in store for us...

PSG started that half fairly strong, and there were signs that they could go on to dominate, especially when Herrera popped up with that early goal.

But their hosts were having none of their big name stars...

Attack after attack came from Brugge and although not causing major concerns, hinted at getting back into the match-up, which they duly did.

And that's the half!

Some high-intensity games over here! We'll be back in 15 minutes with the players but let's reflect on what we've seen here...

UPDATE: Two consecutive goals in the last five minutes!

AC Milan manages to turn the game around in minute 44.

UPDATE: Penalty for Man City and it's 3-1

Goals: Vanaken (27'); Herrera (15')

UPDATE: AC Milan manage to tie the game in the last three minutes! (1-1)

Goal! Rafael Leao's great pass to Ante Rebic awards AC Milan a bottom right corner 1:1.

Peeeeep! There's no more action of note and the ref brings this entertaining first half to an end.

Just a single minute to be added to a frenetic half.

The corner is an inswinger that flies all the way through the a very pleased Keylor Navas and PSG can take a breather (you didn't expect me to write that, did you?!)

De Ketelaere again in the thick of this Brugge seige. He spins around on the left side of the PSG area then swings a left boot. Navas pushes it away but it'll be a corner.

UPDATE: Ajax scores one more making it 3-1!!

A low shot Berghuis low shot after a perfect pass ends in goal! Nothing a goalkeeper can do after shots like that!

Mbappé worry

The French superstar is down and needing treatment it seems.

He steps off the field and immediately looks to come back on...but he doesn't appear completely comfortable.

Navas busy again

De Ketelaere lets fly with a cracking effort which the Costa Rican stopper has to deflect away.

The crowd are turned up another notch as they see their heroes go toe-to-toe with Parisien powerhouse.

Navas again called into action as Lang throws in another tester.

Neymar antics

I may be doing him a disservice but PSG's Brazilian forward has completely conned Scharer who blows for a foul against Balanta. To me it was one of those 'I'll jump backwards to make it looked like you caught me' type simulations.

UPDATE: Sporting (1)- Ajax (2)

Minute 33'- Matheus provides a scoring pass to Paulinho who easily nets with a low shot leaving the goalkeeper stuck on the floor. Sporting shortens distances. There is oxygen, there is faith!

Vanaken steps up with a grass-cutting slider - a horizontal Neymar behind the wall serving no purpose - and Navas has to be down quickly to push the effort away.

That was sneaking in at the far post, and the crowd are loving their team having a real go.

Brugge again back on the attack, being pushed on by a vocal home support.

Lang is first to have a go and then a rather forceful challenge from Wijnaldum hands them a free-kick opportunity...

UPDATE: Man City score a second, it's 2-0

Mukiele scores an unfortunate goal after an vast defense error on the Leipzig side

CLANG!! Messi is starting to remember what he has been doing all these years at Barça.

Cutting inside, with a single step, on the right corner of the area, he curls his magical left foot around the ball only to see it come back off the bar, with Mignolet beaten.

GOAL!!! Brugge are level!

Vanaken it is with the strike from inside the area and a slight deflection takes it away from Navas. Great work from Sobol in the build up.

Game on!

Not dwelling on the fear that must exist in their backline, Brugge head back upfield, Sowah the latest to get the ball into the danger area. Nothing coming.

UPDATE: Manchester City vs. RB Leipzig (1-0)

Ake, the man to open the game for Man. City in minute 16!!

Messi has been quiet thus far but it all just changed there.

After exchanging a couple of quick passes, it had appeared that the space had been completely closed off. Then the little Argentine drops a shoulder, steps away from his closest marker, and rolls the perfectly-weighted pass into the path of Mbappé.

The Frenchman's strike is on target but pushed away to safety by Mignolet.

Liverpool fail to score a decisive penalty in minute 14

Salah fails to score the penalty as his shot aimed the middle of the goal, intentions wisely read by AC milan's goalkeeper, who read the star's intention in a matter of seconds...

Mbappé somehow powers his way through two defenders on the right inside channel. He lifts his head and tries to pick out a teammate but it's too high and Brugge bring the ball away.

Another ball into the area has the Ligue 1 stars looking around nervously. Fortunately they didn't see any black and blue nearby and Navas gets to gather with ease.

Lang delivers into the PSG area as the hosts look to get back to where they were immediately before the goal i.e. knocking on the door.

The defence comes out on top again.

UPDATE: Liverpool- AC Milan (1-0)

Alexander-Arnold opens the scoring for Liverpool in minute 9!

GOAL!! Herrera opens the scoring

It may not have come from one of those expected but a slick move down the left, and a sharp low pass from Mbappé allowed the former Man Utd midfielder to stroke home.

Very tidy!

Vanaken tries his luck from the dead ball situation but the French wall does it's job. There are a few home shouts for a handball though. Ref not interested.

UPDATE: Sporting Lisboa vs. Ajax (0-2)

Haller scores the second goal for Ajax (9')

Paredes into the book after a late lunge. And this gives Brugge another chance to ask some questions of their more illustrious guests...

Chance for Brugge

Mats Rits swings in a dangerous looking corner and Navas looks relieved as the last effort bounces into his arms.

Club Brugge KV force a corner. They send men into the box.

Referee blows the whistle and Kimpembe gets a foul!

PSG holds the ball wisely, dominating, as expected, in these early stages.

A cross by Mbappé from the side of the pitch flies into the box, but fails to find its target!

We're underway! The ball is rolling at the Jan Breydel Stadium

PSG have scored 2+ second-half goals in 18 out of their last 30 Champions League wins! (a 60% majority)

Will we see Messi's first goal today?

10 minutes till the kickoff!!

Leonardo: "We never thought of selling Kylian"

After L'Equipe confirming it would take a bid of at least €200 for PSG to consider selling the player this window, PSG rectifies saying Mbappé was "never on sale".

How many finals and titles does PSG have in the Champions League?

PSG eye their first Champions League title

With one of the best XIs in European football today, the French club has won seven out of the last eight Ligue 1 titles, however, they are still struggling to achieve European glory.

Will Messi manage to take PSG to their most-desired triumph this season?

Notable abscences...

Four players on the Club Brugge's side will be out due to injury: Jose Izquierdo, Matej Mitrovic, Daniel Perez, Ruben Providence

On the other side, the French team will have to go without Di María, following the red card shown and the three-match suspension handed to him in last season's semi-final against Man City. While new signing Sergio Ramos will also be out due to a leg injury, and Verrati's knee injury forcing him to miss the game too!

Navas experience

This guys knows a thing or three about winning the Champions League.

Players to keep an eye on

Hans Vanaken was responsible for the last UCL goal scored by Club Brugge, way back in December 2020. The dangerous midfielder could create some problems for the French side tonight.

On the other side, where do I start? Despite everyone's eyes inevitably being focused on the new Argentinian star, Mbappé, who scored at the weekend, also knocked in a hat trick against Club Brugge in 2019 and will be looking to repeat the accomplishment and make more headlines!

Talking of Real Madrid, they are going to be in action at the same time and my colleague Kieran is all over that. That's where having two windows open can be really fun!

Thumbs up from Kylian

PSG star Mbappé has been getting a hard time from the fans in France of late, as he continues not to sign a new contract amid Real Madrid desires.

He may be happy playing away from home today!

Early UCL kick-offs

As I mentioned in my introduction, I'll aim to keep you up-to-take throughout our main game today of what is happening across the other group games.

There are also some games that have kicked off early and this is how they stand at half-time.

Needless to say Erling Haaland has already filled the onion bag.

MNM in action!

The most-desired frontline are starting for PSG tonight!!

Are you ready to see the historic debut of the MNM?

Just an hour till the kickoff!

Club Brugge and Paris Saint-Germain will battle their opening Champions League game at 9:00 p.m. today at the Jan Breydel Stadium.

Despite the French giants come out as favorites, the Belgian team will try their best to make things difficult for the star team, although they have never made it into the round of 16.

Moreover, PSG, who's blasted this season's market with Messi and Ramos signings among others, will try to finally lift the trophy after quite a few attempts in recent campaigns.

Starting XI: PSG

Navas, Hakimi, Marquinhos, Kimpembe, Diallo, Herrera, Paredes, Wijnaldum, Messi, Mbappé, Neymar

Starting XI: Club Brugge

Mignolet, Balanta, Hendry, Nsoki,Mata, Vormer, Vanaken, Sobol, Lang, De Ketelaere, Sowah

Confirmed team news is coming in...

PSG are all set for the ultimate goal

This campaign for the Parisien giants is clearly focused on being crowned, for the first time, as Champions of Europe. They've come really close in recent seasons, and a summer of top-notch additions surely gives them the best possible chance.

The bookmakers certainly have them down as favourites.

Mbappè hat

So, as long as they keep the young French striker quiet the hosts should be fine tonight. What? Oh!

Brugge badges

It's not often you welcome Lionel Messi to your stadium in the Champions League when he's not in a Barcelona shirt...but that is happening for the first time tonight for the Belgians.
