Spanish teen tennis star Carlos Alcaraz qualifies for Next Gen ATP Finals
Alcaraz had a historic run in the US Open quarterfinals last week and is now amongst the first four people to qualify for the Next Gen ATP Finals.
Carlos Alcaraz has been stunning tennis fans for a while now, and that’s saying a lot considering he’s only 18 years old. He became the youngest US Open quarterfinalist in the Open Era in 2021, not before an upset in the third round saw him defeat third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas. It was an exciting matchup to watch and caught the attention of tennis fans and players around the world. Austrian tennis player Dominic Thiem described it as “maybe one of the best games of the men’s tournament”.
Alcaraz moving up fast in the tennis world
Before the 2021 season, Alcaraz had only one tour-level win, but now he is 22-14 in the season. That includes his big win in New York, an ATP Tour title in Unmag, and being a semifinalist at ATP 250 events in Marbella and Winston-Salem.
Now, he is amongst the first four players to qualify for the Next Gen ATP Finals, a 21-and-under tournament to be held in Milan from November 9th to 13th. The other three are Jannik Sinner of Italy, Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada, and Sebastian Korda of the U.S.
“There is no doubt that his game is made for something huge,” said Thiem. “If you play quarterfinals of a Slam with 18 years old, the way he’s going is pretty much clear.”
