Javier ‘Chofis’ Lopez could be called to the Mexico national team

Javier ‘Chofis’ Lopez is living one of his best moments in his playing career and last week he scored five goals in two games. Since arriving to San Jose Earthquakes in January, the Mexican playmaker has scored 10 goals and given two assists in 24 appearances in the 2021 Major League Soccer campaign.

Making a case to return to the Mexican national team

“Chofis” was voted the MLS Player of the Week 26 and included for the second time in the MLS Team of the Week. The 27-year-old has never been called to the Mexico national team, but with the season he is having, head coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino should give him a shot in the upcoming FIFA international break in October.

Martino has struggled to find a replacement for Raúl Jiménez when he fractured his skull last year and has tried several options on offense, but nobody has been able to fill his shoes. Henry Martín, Alan Pulido and Rogelio Funes Mori have played in the No 9 position and all of them have played as a replacement for Jiménez.

Mexico has only scored 13 goals in their last nine official matches, so there is a spot available for “Chofis” in the national team if Martino gives him an opportunity to make his debut. Mexico will return to action next month with three games for the second round of the World Cup qualifiers in CONCACAF.
