What happened in Andoni Iraola’s first game as Liverpool manager? Watch all the goals

Andoni Iraola experienced his first game in charge of Liverpool, and it is one he will remember with a smile after his side defeated Sunderland in the opening game of preseason and their US tour. The experience and quality of Dominik Szoboszlai and Federico Chiesa ultimately made the difference.

The two Premier League teams met in Nashville and produced an entertaining contest featuring outstanding goals and promising tactical ideas. From the combination play Iraola is looking to implement to the high press and transitions favored by Régis Le Bris’ side, there was plenty to enjoy.

The match got off to the worst possible start for Iraola when Joe Gomez, wearing the captain’s armband, was forced off through injury. Liverpool responded well, though, and Morrison opened the scoring after an excellent move that began deep inside his own penalty area.

Before the half-hour mark, Enzo Le Fée produced the goal of the game with a thunderous left-footed strike into the top corner, leaving Giorgi Mamardashvili with no chance. Early in the second half, Tuterov completed the comeback by calmly finishing a one-on-one opportunity.

The second half became more uneven after a host of substitutions and the introduction of several young players, but Liverpool’s senior stars ultimately settled the contest.

Szoboszlai showcased his powerful shooting with a volley from the edge of the box before Chiesa restored Liverpool’s lead with a composed finish inside the area. Koumas added the final goal after the game opened up and Liverpool’s superiority became increasingly evident.

Iraola will have another opportunity to continue preparing for the start of the Premier League season on Wednesday when Liverpool faces Wrexham, looking to build on an encouraging first outing before the new campaign begins.
