Brazil vs Uruguay: preview
Uruguay are in need of a win after collecting just one point from their two World Cup qualifiers so far in October, but Óscar Tabárez’s men must end a poor run of results against Brazil if they are to get the better of a side who are cruising towards Qatar 2022.
The Uruguayans, who are bidding to reach a fourth successive World Cup finals for the first time since 1974, last beat Brazil back in 2001. Since then, they have lost eight out of 11 against the Seleção.
Uruguay are currently in the fourth and final automatic World Cup spot in South America’s qualifying group - but, after drawing with Colombia last Thursday, their 3-0 defeat to Argentina on Sunday left them just one point ahead of Los Cafeteros in fifth place, a position whose occupants would go into an inter-confederation play-off.
Meanwhile, Brazil’s 100% record in World Cup qualifying came to an end when they were held to a 0-0 draw by Colombia at the weekend - with star forward Neymar criticised for his ineffective display - but Tite’s team have a healthy six-point lead at the top of the group.
The five-time World Cup winners, who have never missed out on the tournament, are 13 points clear of fifth, with a game in hand on everyone except second-placed Argentina.
