Eddie Howe agrees deal in principle to become new Newcastle manager

Eddie Howe has agreed a deal in principle to become the new Newcastle United manager on a two-and-a-half-year contract.

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle's new owners were impressed with the way the English coach presented his views on the Premier League club as well as his level of detail and research.

It is unlikely the former Bournemouth boss will take charge for Saturday's Premier League match at Brighton but both sides want to complete the appointment in time for this weekend's match.

The 43-year-old has been out of work since leaving Bournemouth in the summer of 2020 following their relegation to the Championship. Jason Tindall, Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone are set to join Howe as his backroom staff. Howe began his managerial career in December 2008 as caretaker of Bournemouth.

Emery turns down Newcastle

Villarreal head coach Unai Emery was the favourite to take over at St James' Park this week but ruled himself out of the running to become Steve Bruce's successor. Emery held talks with Newcastle but has since decided to stay in charge of the Europa League winners.

In a statement, Emery said: "Honestly, I am grateful for the interest shown by a great club [Newcastle], but am also even more grateful to stay here, and I have communicated to Fernando Roig my decision to want to continue as part of this project and for the commitment and respect that I have received from the club and my players, it is mutual and reciprocated.

"I also want to show gratitude for the love and support that has always been shown to me. This Sunday, we have a very important game and I hope that, together, we can achieve victory. We will see you in the Estadio Cerámica."
