Steve Bruce has left his manager's post at Newcastle United by mutual consent just days after the club's Saudi Arabian-backed takeover. Bruce was appointed manager at St James Park in July 2019. He brought up his 1,000th match in charge at the weekend but was unable to celebrate it as he would have liked as his team slumped to a 2-3 defeat to Tottenham.

The Magpies currently sit second from bottom in the table, just one point ahead of Norwich City, as Bruce becomes the second Premier League manager to leave his post this season following Xisco Muñoz's dismissal by Watford.

Graeme Jones will lead Newcastle on an interim basis, starting with Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace, and will be supported by the coaching team of Steve Agnew, Stephen Clemence, Ben Dawson and Simon Smith.

Newcastle revealed that the process of finding and recruiting a new manager has started and an appointment will be announced in due course.
