Nigeria 1-1 Cape Verde: as it happened

Our coverage of Nigeria vs Cape Verde ends here. The Super Eagles advance to the 2022 World Cup playoffs. Thanks for joining and see you soon!

Nigeria get the job done

Nigeria boss Gernot Rohr has been criticised for the way his side have been playing. Nigeria played well in the first half against Cape Verde but failed to make the most of their chances. In the second half, they huffed and puffed. Rohr has a lot of work to do now ahead of the playoffs next March if he wants to take the Eagles to the World Cup in Qatar.

FT: Nigeria 1-1 Cape Verde

Osimhen reaches double figures

The Napoli striker, still just 22, moved into double figures for Nigeria today with his first half strike.

19 caps, 10 goals, 5 assists.

Group C final standings

Nigeria win Group C by two points. Cape Verde finish second on 11 points, followed by Liberia in third and the Central African Republic last.

The draw was enough for the Super Eagles. They had plenty of chances in the first half to extend their lead but Cape Verde, to their credit, stayed in the game right until the very end.

It wasn't to be for Cape Verde, who finish second in Group C. Nigeria can now look forward to joining nine other teams in the playoffs next March for a place at Qatar 2022.

Cape Verde get us underway in the second half!

A point will be enough for the Super Eagles today. Six teams are already through to the playoffs in March 2022, with nine teams still in contention for four places.

As things stand, Nigeria will top Group C and head for the playoffs next March. Victor Osimhen gave them an early lead, before Cape Verde equalised through Stopira. The Super Eagles could be ahead but have failed to make the most of their first half chances.

Whoever tops Group C today will be one of 10 group winners to go through to the playoffs. Each group winner will then play home and away against another group winner for a place in next year's World Cup.

13

Ighalo is fouled by Fortes and Nigeria have a free-kick.

11

Iwobi strikes!

He hits the target but it's not his finest strike ever. Well, it's been an excellent opening 10 minutes in Lagos. We've already had two goals.

8

Tavares heads over for Cape Verde. It's another set-piece, this time from the left but he fails to keep his header down.

Stopira does really well to get in front of his marker and keep his shot down. It's a really well-taken finish.

STOPIRA scores from close range from the corner out on the right. Cape Verde have gotten right back into this.

6

Goooooooooooooooaaallll!

Cape Verde equalise!!!

6

Good pressure from Tavares wins Cape Verde a corner.

Roberto Lopes miscued his header in the box, before it fell to the Napoli striker and he makes no mistake from close range.

That's Osimhen's fourth goal of the qualifying round. He's on fire at club level too and at 22 will only get better.

Gernot Rohr: "It's good to play with pressure"

Nigeria boss Gernot Rohr spoke ahead of his side's crunch clash with Cape Verde on Tuesday.

"It's good to have pressure for my players."

Group C

1 | Nigeria - 12 points

2 | Cape Verde - 10 points

Cape Verde unbeaten away from home

Cape Verde are unbeaten away from home in qualifying, but Nigeria are the stronger of the two sides and many expect them to earn all three points today.

Third meeting between the sides

A win for either side today would see them advance to the Third Round. A draw would be enough for Nigeria but not for Cape Verde so there will be a lot at stake in Lagos in what promises to be a tense match.

It will also be a significant milestone for Gernot Rohr who will oversee his 54th match in charge of the Super Eagles, surpassing the record which he shares with former Nigeria coach, Shaibu Amodu.

Apart from the September meeting in Mindelo, Nigeria and Cape Verde have crossed paths just once before - in a friendly in January 2013 which failed to produce goals.
