Update:
The current 18 team layout is shaken up in its first year back from covid with this year’s multi-city format. How does it work and when do the USA play?

The Davis Cup returns in 2021 after the event’s cancellation last year due to covid. 2019 saw a big shakeup in what is billed as the World Cup of Tennis, when it moved from the traditional 16 team brackets to a new 18 team format. As controversial as that was, the Davis Cup won’t be outdone and have adopted another new change in only the second outing since the last. This year the tournament will be held simultaneously in three host cities, Madrid, Innsbruck, and Turin.

All of the group stage ties will be held in one location, and with Team USA in Group E, their matches will be held in Turin, Italy. They will begin their work on Friday, November 26th and there will be one tie each day through to Sunday. If they should make it to the quarter-final stage, play will commence directly afterward on Monday, November 29th.

How does it work?

All ties will consist of two singles and one doubles. Both singles and doubles are best-of-three sets with ad scoring. The first match will be contested by the second-ranked players on each team and the second match will be contested by the first-ranked players on each team. The doubles match will follow the singles match.

The teams with the highest number of points in their group once all matches have been played will qualify for the quarter-finals, alongside the best two runners-up. The tournament will then go into knockout rounds until one team is crowned champion.
