Fabio Álvarez unable to find the target in Pumas-América stalemate

All to play for in the 'Clásico Capitalino' between Pumas UNAM and Club América after a scoreless draw at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario for the first leg of the 2021 Liga MX quarter final match.

Pumas had the best opportunities

The first opportunity for the home side came in the 35th minute of the match, but Guillermo Ochoa anticipated a header from Diogo after a free kick. A few minutes later Efraín Velarde, who was playing his 500th league game shot from distance, but once again Ochoa was able to clear the danger.

América would have a good opportunity in the 40th minute when Federico Viñas made a powerful left footed shot that was punched away by Alfredo Talavera. Both teams returned to their respective locker rooms with a nil-nil draw after 45 minutes.

The second half was very intense and tactical with a lot of fouls being committed from both teams. Late in the second half Higor Meritão, who came in as a substitute, found the back of the net after a great through ball, but he was caught offside.

The referee waited for the play to end to make the call. The VAR double checked and the referee made the right call. In stoppage time Fabio Álvarez was through after a great pass from Corozo and he chipped the ball to beat Guillermo Ochoa, but the effort drifted wide. Now both teams will try to book their ticket to the next round on 27 November at the Azteca stadium.
