The character of Spider-Man has been played by three different actors in live-action movies: Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and most recently by Tom Holland.

Tobey Maguire

The first Spider-Man and its sequel, Spider-Man 2, were both blockbuster hits, carried by Maguire in the titular role. They performed well at the box office, grossing $821 million and $789 million respectively. In 2007, Maguire reprized his role as Peter Parker in Spider-Man 3, but its strong box office performance masked the major problems with the film.

Maguire's performance in the film lacked the authenticity in the portrayal of the dark side of Spider-Man that the role required as being under the influence of the symbiote, including a bizarre scene where 'evil' Peter dances down a street in New York.

Sam Raimi, the director of the Spider-Man movies starring Maguire, admitted that Spider-Man 3 was a disappointment and stated that he wanted a chance to redeem the Spider-Man movies by directing a fourth installment of the story.

Andrew Garfield

Garfield has won and been nominated for various acting awards in his career, being nominated for an Oscar in 2017 for Hacksaw Ridge as well as winning awards at the BAFTAs. Garfield was cast as Spider-Man, opposite Emma Stone as his love interest Gwen Stacy, in Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012, a reboot of the Spider-Man film series after Maguire's tenure. It went on to gross a worldwide total of more than $750 million. He would star in the sequel two years later.

However, Marvel's requisition of the Spider-Man IP meant future projects were scrapped, and it has taken until 2021 for Garfield to play Peter Parker once again.

Tom Holland

Before becoming Spider-Man, Holland was a relatively unknown actor in the US. He had starred in some BBC dramas in the UK, but nothing major.

As part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he first appeared as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. The film was a massive critical and commercial success, grossing over $1.1 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of 2016. The next year brought the release of Spider-Man: Homecoming, in which Holland reprised the role. Homecoming received positive reviews and Holland considerable praise. 2021 sees Holland return as the web-slinger in No Way Home.
