The Spanish Super Cup is right around the corner and Saudi Arabia (we’ll get to that) is going through their final preparations ahead of the four teams landing on Asian soil.

Luis Rubiales’ presidency of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) certainly ended in the spotlight, but before then the former Hamilton footballer had implemented certain changes to the way things work in Spain that caught people’s attention. One of his more controversial moves, apart from making Sevilla’s La Cartuja stadium the unofficial home of the Spanish national team, was to move the Super Cup to Saudi Arabia.

Since 2019, the mini-tournament has been a final four system, moving away from the previous two-legged affair at either team’s ground in Spain. In that sense the change was a success: the Spanish Super Cup was given a refreshed sense of importance, new dates, a bigger marketing push and a more competitive format. However, lumping it 4,000 miles away was where the positivity runs out in my view and, not for the first time, a Luis Rubiales idea falls flat on the ground.

Sticking with the positives, the RFEF’s new-ish format for the Super Cup has given the previously drab set of semi-pre-season games a sense of competitiveness; previously, it could have been classed as Heisenberg’s uncertainty tournament: both a pre-season game and the first game of the season, depending on who observes it. Now, with the final four all taking place in the same stadium over the course of a few days, the stakes seem higher and winning the trophy feels like more of an occasion.

Spanish Super Cup 2023/24 teams:

We’ve explained the reasons behind why these specific teams are in the Super Cup, but here’s a list of them so you don’t forget:

Spanish Super Cup teams:

  • Real Madrid: (Copa del Rey 22-23 finalists)
  • Osasuna (Copa del Rey 22-23 finalists)
  • Barcelona (LaLiga 22-23 winners)
  • Atlético Madrid (next in the league after Real Madrid, who come second in LaLiga but had already qualified)

So, of these four teams, the magic football supercomputer pulled out the completely random fixtures and we ended up with these fantastic four:

Spanish Super Cup fixtures:

Semi-final 1: Real Madrid - Atlético Madrid

Semi-final 2: FC Barcelona - Osasuna

Copa del Rey winners Real Madrid booked their place in the Spanish Super Cup by making the final along with Osasuna.
