New Year’s Day falls on Saturday this year, and most banks close their doors to let employees enjoy the last night of the year without the worry of getting up the next morning.

Since federal holidays that fall on a weekend are moved to the closest week day, that means Friday gets that honor this year and which probably leaves you wondering whether you can visit your bank if you need to before the year is out.

Luckily, most banks can choose whether to open on federal holidays and minus a few exceptions do for New Year's Eve. You should be safe is expecting your branch to be open on Friday 31 December, but it is unlikely you will be so lucky on Saturday 1 January.

New Year's Day is one of 13 bank holidays in the US when the Federal Reserve closes. Even though banks are not required to close on 1 January, don’t expect to find one open. Given that the New Year's Day 2022 is on Saturday, the bank holiday will be on Friday, so inter-bank transactions will not be processed until the next business day. However, banks should be open on Friday 31 December but perhaps with shorter than normal operating hours depending on the bank. If you're in a pinch, you can always use online banking services.

When will banks be open?

Many businesses including banks close on New Year's Day, but you should be able to find some major stores open. On New Year's Eve your bank branch should be open but could have shorter hours. Otherwise, you’ll need to wait until the next business day, which will be Monday 3 January this year.

Call your local bank branch to see what their hours will be on New Year's Eve just in case the choice has been made to close early. Last year some banks were requiring customers to make appointments for in-person business to limit the number of people in offices due to covid-19. With the US experiencing yet another surge going into the holiday season you may want to check before you jump in the car.

At most banks, if you must do any transactions on New Year's Eve or Day you can use an ATM or online banking service. However, be aware that the Federal Reserve will be closed New Year's Day, as well as New Year's Eve this year, so any money transfers done between banks will not be processed until the following business day.

For those who need to do Market Mutual Funds transactions with JP Morgan banks and some of their third-party partners, there are early cut-off times for New Year's Eve, as well as days before and after other observed US holidays.

What to do in an emergency

If you need to make a transfer to someone in a hurry on New Year's Day you can look into using a peer-to-peer or mobile payment system like Venmo but research which one you are going to use first since not all send money instantly. The best option is to check with your bank to see if they have a service already integrated into their online app.

You can also try calling your local bank to see if they are open or have someone watching the helm, but don’t be surprised if no one picks up the phone.
