Weston McKennie scores for Juventus in Supercoppa defeat
The United States men’s international team midfielder gave Juventus an early lead in the Supercoppa, but Inter Milan took the win with a late goal from Alexis Sánchez.
Weston McKennie’s future at Juventus has been up in the air since the beginning of the January transfer window and the Serie A side rejected an offer from Tottenham last week. While several teams are keen on signing him, the USMNT player is keeping his focus on the Serie A side and earning the trust of the manager Massimiliano Allegri.
First goal of the year
Juventus played the Supercoppa Italiana on Wednesday against Inter Milan and McKennie scored the opening goal of the match at the San Siro stadium. This was his first club goal since October 2021 and it came in one of the most important games of the campaign.
The United States men’s national team player headed the ball into the back of the net in the 25th minute of the match to give Juventus an early lead. This was his first goal since scoring for the USMNT against Mexico in World Cup qualifying back in October, but it was not enough to secure the title.
In the 35th minute Lautaro Martínez scored from the penalty spot to equalize and in extra time Alexis Sánchez, who came on as substitute, gave Inter Milan a 2-1 win. With this result the Milan-based team won the Supercoppa i dramatic fashion.
