Egypt on the spot

That's a pretty decent return from the penalty lottery. Maybe it's not after all...

as.com

The MO-ment that sealed it all!

In what was a tough match for both sides, it came down to the Liverpool star to bring it all home!

as.com

Penalties see Egypt through after even match!

In what could be considered a very even match, both teams gave as good as they got. While it will probably be Egypt who tips the Ivory Coast when the final tally of shots comes in, one has to give credit to the Elephants who had no shortage of chances for themselves.

Indeed the likes of Zaha and Pepe will count themselves unlucky having seen guilt edge chances go begging. With that said, let us take a moment to welcome you here to AS USA for what was our live text coverage of the AFCON Round of 16 match between Egypt and Ivory Coast.

In the end it was the Pharaohs who got the better of the Elephants after a gritty and rugged match that went to extra time. Alas it was the ever cruel lottery of penalties that decided the match between to giants of African football, with Egypt winning 5-4 on the night.

as.com

Penalty Round 4

It's now 3-3 after the Ivory Coast tie the game, but they are one shot behind. They need a save here and now! Unfortunately they won't get it as Mohamed Abdelmonem places the ball high in the net. The score is now 4-3

as.com

Penalty Round 3

We have our first save! The Egyptian keeper gives his side the chance to go ahead and they do as Omar Kamal calmly slots home. It's now 3-2

as.com

Penalty Round 2

Ibrahim Sangare makes it 2-1 to Egypt but then El Solia ties it at 2-2

as.com

Penalty Round 1

Nicholas Pepe calmly slots the ball in the right side of the net giving Ivory Coast a 1-0 lead in the shoot out, BUT then so to does Sayed Ahmed Jaafar for Egypt. We are tied at 1-1

as.com

The coin toss

Though there are smiles between both captains - Aurier and Salah - they know well what's on the line as they chat with the referee. Ivory Coast has won the toss and as such will be kicking first! Gabaski awaits in the goal.

as.com

Penalty time!

With nerves in the eyes of both goal keepers, we can see clearly what this means to either one. There has indeed been a high level of football on show between these two African powerhouses. Now it's down to a lottery!

as.com
120

And that's it! To penalties we go! Both teams are making their way off the field for the final preparations, but make no mistake it will be a spot kick lottery that decides who goes forward and who goes home!

as.com
118

With just 2 minutes left, the tension is now palpable. Failing last minute drama we will need a penalty shootout to decide who books their ticket to the AFCON quarterfinals!

as.com
115

Captain Aurier to the rescue. In a last ditch effort the defender is able to block what would surely have been a very dangerous Egyptian cross. A corner to Egypt but in the end it is easily cleared by the Elephants who manage to break through Zaha. The Ivory Coast forward, however, manages to get into a tussle with defenders and is finally blown for a foul. The referee has to step in to bring a stop to a loss of discipline.

as.com
115

We now have 5 minutes left before we head to the lottery of penalties in order to decide this AFCON Round of 16 match.

as.com
113

Egypt for their part should be credited. They have attempted to go for the win throughout this period of extra time, rather than a more conservative approach.

as.com
112

Egypt will restart and manage to earn themselves a throw-in deep into Ivory Coast territory.

as.com
111

Egypt restart but there is a foul in the middle of the park by Wilfred Zaha who picks up a card for his troubles.

as.com
110

There are some challenges starting to look very questionable, which it seems the referee has noticed as he attempts to tell the players to calm down.

as.com
108

The Elephants appear content to play slowly from the back. Could they be banking on a victory in penalties?

as.com
107

What's at stake now is evident in the demeanor of both teams as they have started the second half of extra time in a rather cautious way.

as.com
106

Off we go again! If you're just joining us, it's been quite an intense game. We are now in the second half of extra time in this AFCON Round of 16 match between Ivory Coast and Egypt. The score remains locked at 0-0 which means penalties await should neither team manage to score.

Welcome of course to our live text coverage here on AS USA!

as.com

The two teams taking a moment quickly for water before they start once again.

as.com
105

That brings us to the end of the first period of extra time. We have 15 minutes more and then it's penalties if the scores are still the same.

as.com
103

After an incredible shot from distance by Ibrahim Sangaré, the Egyptians could only hope for the best from their substitute goalkeeper. Thankfully for their hopes, he delivered. Corner to Ivory Coast.

as.com
103

As we approach the end of this first half of extra time, the specter of penalties is beginning to loom large.

as.com
102

For the moment it appears that Zaha will continue, however he looks worse for it.

as.com
100

A heavy foul by Omar Kamal on Wilfred Zaha. Zaha has remained on the ground and is in visible pain.

as.com
99

The Ivory Coast manage to regain some sense of calm after a period of disarray and get the ball going once again.

as.com
97

After a driving run by Egypt, its Zizo who let's fly from distance. His effort his saved in the end by Ivory Coast's keeper who is lucky - due to the deflection - that no Egyptians were following up.

as.com
96

We are underway once again having seen Sherif stretchered off the field. It would seem he's worse for wear than initially thought. The Ivory Coast seem to be applying pressure now rather than killing time.

as.com
94

Sherif remains on the ground as medical staff attend. He seems to have taken a blow to the mouth as they are using cotton swabs and q-tips at the moment.

as.com
92

Egypt again go close after some very neat build up play. A deep cross is headed back across goal but the resulting header from Sherif is put over the bar. It seems he's also taken a knock in the process and is currently on the ground.

as.com
90

We are underway once again and almost immediately Egypt have a chance on goal as the substitute Trezeguet sees his effort stopped.

as.com

As we prepare for the start of the first period of extra time, it should be said that though committed and intense, it has been a very sportsmanlike game between the two teams at all times.

as.com

To extra time we go! It's been quite a battle between these two heavy weights of African football, but they have yet to separate themselves from each other. As both teams hydrate while listening to their coaches, one has to wonder whether we will get a goal OR will we have to see it decided with the drama of penalties?

as.com
90+2

With just 2 minutes left in stoppage time, it would appear that we're heading for extra time barring last minute heroics!

as.com

There will be yet another corner with but in the end it falls safely to the new keeper. There are smiles all around.

as.com
90+1

Nicholas Pepe forces a corner out of Egypt with time running out!

as.com
90

We have arrived at the 90th minute! There will be 4 minutes of added time!

as.com
88

Sadly Egypt's goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy will live the field of play with 2 minutes left. He is replaced by Gabaski

as.com
85

It appears that Mohamed El-Shenawy has paid for his efforts in goal as he is now seated and receiving medical attention. He has just motioned to the sideline that he can't continue, forcing the Egyptians to change goal keeper at this late stage!

as.com
84

A spectacular save from Mohamed El-Shenawy in Egypt's goal after a well worked move by the Ivory Coast resulted in him having to face Wilfred Zaha 1 on 1.

as.com
82

Eric Bailley - who has been wearing a head brace - has taken a seat on the field in visible pain after heading away a goal kick. He appears to be able to continue though shaken.

as.com
81

As we close in on the end of this match it would appear that we are heading to extra time with the score still locked at 0-0 in this AFCON Round of 16 match between Ivory Coast and Egypt.

as.com
79

The Ivory Coast has returned the ball to Egypt in a display of sportsmanship and we are off and running once again.

as.com
78

Hamdi Fathi is on the ground at the moment and it appears he will not continue as the medical staff in attendance have signaled for a substitute.

as.com
78

Again the Ivorians have an effort on goal, but again it is from distance. They are still yet to break the organized lines of the Egyptian defense.

as.com
77

For the moment the Ivory Coast is in control of the match. They are applying pressure and have Egypt camped on the edge of their own area.

as.com
75

Wilferd Zaha attempts to make his presence known but he's swiftly dispossessed leading to an Egyptian counter. In the end the Ivorians manage to regain control and try to rebuild once again.

as.com
74

An effort from distance by Nicholas Pepe. While it seemed no threat, an awkward bounce before arriving at the keeper made it somewhat problematic.

as.com
73

A crunching foul by Ivory Coast's Eric Bailley in the middle of the field. He's lucky to not be cautioned by the referee.

as.com
71

The Ivory Coast will make two changes with Wilfred Zaha entering for Max Gradel along with Jean Michaël Seri who is changed for Jeremie Boga. The Egyptians also make a change with Trezeguet replaceing Omar Marmoush.

as.com
69

What a chance! After a deep corner by Pepe, the ball is headed back across goal to the head of Sébastien Haller who sees his header from point blank range. The Elephants will be scratching their heads!

as.com
69

The Ivory Coast with a decent corner resulting in a decent opportunity at goal but the ball is cleared at the last moment for yet another corner. Can they convert?

as.com
66

Mo Salah has shown himself to be a worthy captain tonight, as he has shifted from target man, to midfielder, to even front line defense. All the while managing to keep the Ivorians on their toes.

as.com
65

Egypt are once again forced to return to their keeper as they are finding it harder and harder to claim space in dangerous areas.

as.com
64

For the moment the game has become a bit of a tit for tat, with neither side threatening the goal, but instead exchanging blows in the middle of the field.

as.com
60

We're now at the 60 minute mark. If you've just joined us then welcome to our live text coverage here on AS USA. We've got a clash of titans in the AFCON Round of 16 as Ivory Coast are currently doing battle against Egypt. We await our first goal with the score tied at 0-0

as.com
58

Mostafa Fathi is down at the moment but manages to get up and walk off on his own steam. It appears that he won't be substituted as he waits for the ref to allow him to rejoin the match

as.com
56

Egypt have definitely taken the upper hand in this match now. There have been several shots in quick succession, however, each one has been charged down by an Ivory Coast defense that is - for the moment - hemmed into their own area.

as.com
55

As we close in on the 60 minute mark we are still standing at 0-0 in this AFCON Round of 16 match between Ivory Coast and Egypt

as.com
53

After a period of dominance the Egyptians are forced back into their own half by some tidy play by the Elephants. A corner is won, lost and possession returned to them at which point Egypt is forced to foul in the middle of the park.

as.com
52

Once again Salah is involved setting up Mohamed Elneny who sees his fierce shot deflected wickedly which in turn forces the Ivory Coast keeper into a desperate save!

as.com
51

Alone and in space for the first time, Mo Salah cut in off the right side and found his team with a precise pass across the box, unfortunately his compatriot could only blast the ball into the stands.

as.com
50

A dangerous ball is played deep into Ivory Coast territory and the Egyptians are able to build from a cross but in the end the ball is too far from the mark and the Ivorians rebuild.

as.com
49

Carlos Quieroz appears to have got the message across to his team as the Pharaohs have most definitely started the half with more pep in their step!

as.com
47

Salah makes his first foray of the second half into the Elephant's final third but he is finally dispossessed.

as.com
46

Arsenal starlet Nicholas Pepe is promptly double teamed and fouled resulting in a free kick. Aurier takes it but the set piece amounts to nothing with Egypt breaking immediately.

as.com
46

And away we go! The second half is off and running as we get to the business side of this AFCON round of 16 match between Ivory Coast and Egypt. Who will be in the quarterfinals is the question of the night!

as.com

The 12th man

If there is one thing that's certain about this game it's that neither team has lacked support. The crowd has been crazy since the first whistle, with both teams enjoying the sounds of vuvuzelas and chants!

as.com

We're almost ready!

The teams are making their way back out onto the field as we prepare for the start of this AFCON Round of 16 match between two African giants of football, the Ivory Coast and Egypt!

as.com

Welcome to AS USA's live coverage of the AFCON

The score is currently locked at 0-0 after an intense but even first half. With a place in the quarterfinals at stake, there is everything to play for in the second half. Stay with us!

as.com

The way things stand at the half

It has indeed been an intense affair so far. While goals would of course be preferable when the second half comes, nobody can deny the quality we have seen on show so far!

as.com

A game of few chances, but INTENSE!

While there have not been many chances on either side, the ones we have seen have been quality. The Egyptians were first to test the goal with a long range effort that ricocheted off the crossbar. Indeed it seemed to be a half in which they were determined to test their range as two other efforts came in from distance.

For their part the Ivory Coast has perhaps had less joy in the final third but will be critical of themselves for not having found the net when Ibrahim Sangaré has a close range scissors kick effort expertly blocked by the Egyptian's keeper.

as.com
45+1

And that's a wrap for the first half of play in this AFCON Round of 16 game between Ivory Coast and Egypt. If you're just joining us then allow us to welcome you to our live text coverage of the game here on AS USA. The score is currently 0-0 as we await the start of the second half!

as.com
45

There will be 1 minute of added time

as.com
43

As we close out the half it could be seen that things have been relatively equal between the sides. The Egyptians have seen two long range efforts go close while the Elephants of the Ivory Coast had a close range acrobatic effort parried away by the keeper.

as.com
42

The result of the free kick is a frenetic scramble by the Ivorians to clear the ball out of their own area - which they attempt several times without luck!

as.com
41

After being double teamed, Mo Salah manages to win a free kick from the right side. The man himself will take it!

as.com
40

Egypt attempt to regain their composure after a spell of frenzied pressure by the Elephants. We're almost at the half now.

as.com
38

As if from nothing. The Elephants have what can only be called the chance of the game! after a deep cross Ibrahim Sangaré sees his scissors kick effort deflected away by the Egyptian keeper!

as.com
35

After clever build up play by Salah, his compatriot is presented with a chance to shoot, which he does. Ivory Coast's keeper is forced into a diving save. A corner to follow.

as.com
34

Egypt is definitely in their stride now. Having had two very decent efforts in the game so far, the gulf in confidence between the two sides is noticeable. The Pharaohs are enjoying the lion's share of possession at this point.

as.com
32

The Elephants are once again trying their luck down the right side, but are promptly dispossessed by Egypt who immediately mount a counter attack. Salah is definitely beginning to pull strings in this match now!

as.com
30

Due to an earlier knock it seems that Franck Kessié has been forced off the field. The AC Milan player will surely be missed in the middle of the park.

as.com
30

We have just arrived at the half hour mark in this AFCON round of 16 match between Ivory Coast and Egypt. The score is 0-0

as.com
28

Arsenal's Mohamed Elneny is blown for a cynical foul in midfield and reacts poorly to the referee's warnings. He will want to watch himself.

as.com
27

The Ivory Coast have won themselves a freekick in a dangerous area, but in the end the effort is timid at best and Egypt restarts.

as.com
25

A decent ball was played to Ivory Coast's Pepe down the right side. The Arsenal player is able to get to the by-line but in the end his weak cross along the ground is no trouble for the waiting goal keeper. Egypt to restart.

as.com
24

For the moment the game has become somewhat of a midfield slog as the two teams attempt to gain control over the match. The score stands at 0-0.

as.com
22

The Elephants are able to see off the threat and now look to start again with a goal kick.

as.com
21

As he heard his name called, Mo Salah turned up with a dangerous effort from outside the area, forcing the Ivorian keeper into a save. Salah is due to take the resulting corner.

as.com
20

It would appear its now the turn of the Pharaohs to be patient with the ball. Mo Salah who has been tightly marked, has now dropped deeper into midfield to lend his assistance.

as.com
18

As if on cue the Elephants have regained their composure and are now attempting to build the ball from the back with patience. Egypt is growing in confidence and as such Carlos Quieroz's men will need to be cautious with their North African opponents.

as.com
16

What a strike from Egypt as Omar Marmoush sees his fierce shot at goal from a long distance come off the cross bar! Almost from the middle of the park, the effort could only be watched by the helpless goal keeper.

as.com
15

The Egyptians are coming into their own now as they are getting better touches on the ball.

as.com
13

Ivory Coast Captain and Spurs player Serge Aurier has been a thorn so far on the right side for the Pharoahs ,but he has yet to link well with Arsenal winger Nicholas Pepe.

as.com
11

The Elephants are at it again as they continue to drive down the right side. The Egyptians will want to address that side of the field lest they find themselves conceding much more than they have at present.

as.com
9

Mo Salah lofts the resulting freekick into the opposing area, but in the end it finds only the Ivorian keeper's hands.

as.com
8

The first card of the game goes to Seri of the Ivory Coast after a heavy foul in the middle of the park. Indeed the Elephants' player is perhaps lucky that the card was not of a different color!

as.com
7

The Egyptians are finding life hard at the moment as they are being continually pinned into their own half. Star player Mo Salah has yet to put his mark on the game.

as.com
6

Egypt are trying to get into their rhythm but for the moment they have managed to do nothing other than maintain possession for brief spells.

as.com
4

Ivory Coast have definitely started the match with their feet on the gas. There was a promising run down the right side by the Elephants but in the end Egypt are able to marshal the ball out for a goal kick.
