In what was a tough match for both sides, it came down to the Liverpool star to bring it all home!
Penalties see Egypt through after even match!
In what could be considered a very even match, both teams gave as good as they got. While it will probably be Egypt who tips the Ivory Coast when the final tally of shots comes in, one has to give credit to the Elephants who had no shortage of chances for themselves.
Indeed the likes of Zaha and Pepe will count themselves unlucky having seen guilt edge chances go begging. With that said, let us take a moment to welcome you here to AS USA for what was our live text coverage of the AFCON Round of 16 match between Egypt and Ivory Coast.

The coin toss
Though there are smiles between both captains - Aurier and Salah - they know well what's on the line as they chat with the referee. Ivory Coast has won the toss and as such will be kicking first! Gabaski awaits in the goal.
Penalty time!
With nerves in the eyes of both goal keepers, we can see clearly what this means to either one. There has indeed been a high level of football on show between these two African powerhouses. Now it's down to a lottery!
And that's it! To penalties we go! Both teams are making their way off the field for the final preparations, but make no mistake it will be a spot kick lottery that decides who goes forward and who goes home!
With just 2 minutes left, the tension is now palpable. Failing last minute drama we will need a penalty shootout to decide who books their ticket to the AFCON quarterfinals!
Captain Aurier to the rescue. In a last ditch effort the defender is able to block what would surely have been a very dangerous Egyptian cross. A corner to Egypt but in the end it is easily cleared by the Elephants who manage to break through Zaha. The Ivory Coast forward, however, manages to get into a tussle with defenders and is finally blown for a foul. The referee has to step in to bring a stop to a loss of discipline.

Egypt for their part should be credited. They have attempted to go for the win throughout this period of extra time, rather than a more conservative approach.
Egypt will restart and manage to earn themselves a throw-in deep into Ivory Coast territory.

There are some challenges starting to look very questionable, which it seems the referee has noticed as he attempts to tell the players to calm down.
The Elephants appear content to play slowly from the back. Could they be banking on a victory in penalties?
What's at stake now is evident in the demeanor of both teams as they have started the second half of extra time in a rather cautious way.

We are underway once again having seen Sherif stretchered off the field. It would seem he's worse for wear than initially thought. The Ivory Coast seem to be applying pressure now rather than killing time.
Sherif remains on the ground as medical staff attend. He seems to have taken a blow to the mouth as they are using cotton swabs and q-tips at the moment.
Egypt again go close after some very neat build up play. A deep cross is headed back across goal but the resulting header from Sherif is put over the bar. It seems he's also taken a knock in the process and is currently on the ground.
We are underway once again and almost immediately Egypt have a chance on goal as the substitute Trezeguet sees his effort stopped.
As we prepare for the start of the first period of extra time, it should be said that though committed and intense, it has been a very sportsmanlike game between the two teams at all times.
To extra time we go! It's been quite a battle between these two heavy weights of African football, but they have yet to separate themselves from each other. As both teams hydrate while listening to their coaches, one has to wonder whether we will get a goal OR will we have to see it decided with the drama of penalties?
With just 2 minutes left in stoppage time, it would appear that we're heading for extra time barring last minute heroics!

A game of few chances, but INTENSE!
While there have not been many chances on either side, the ones we have seen have been quality. The Egyptians were first to test the goal with a long range effort that ricocheted off the crossbar. Indeed it seemed to be a half in which they were determined to test their range as two other efforts came in from distance.
For their part the Ivory Coast has perhaps had less joy in the final third but will be critical of themselves for not having found the net when Ibrahim Sangaré has a close range scissors kick effort expertly blocked by the Egyptian's keeper.
