Mexico set to overtake the USMNT in FIFA World Ranking
The United States men’s national team suffered a tough defeat against Canada in the qualifiers and that cost them to drop spots in FIFA World Rankings.
Mexico and the United States are on the verge of qualifying to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in November and there are only three games left in the round-robin tournament in CONCACAF. The USMNT suffered a tough defeat against Canada, while the Mexican national hasn't lost in the first three-game international window of the year.
The United States and Mexico are tied in points (21), but the North American side has a better goal differential than their neighbors. Due to the fact that Mexico didn’t lose in the last qualifying matches, they are expected to surpass the USMNT in the next FIFA World Ranking that will be released on 10 February.
The next FIFA World Ranking
Mexico (+2) 12th place
USA (-2) 13th place
Canada (+7) 33rd place
Costa Rica (+7) 62nd place
Canada the biggest surprise
‘Les Rouges’ have been the biggest surprise in World Cup qualifiers in CONCACAF because they are the only undefeated team in the campaign. They have a record of seven wins, four draws and zero losses, with only three games left in the round-robin tournament. They are one point away from securing their second ever World Cup appearance and they are about to make history in the FIFA World Rankings.
It is expected that Canada will be 33rd in the world and this would be the highest-ever ranking, breaking their previous high of 40th place set last November and back in 1996. ‘Les Rouges’ will return to action in March to secure their spot in the next World Cup to play against Costa Rica, Jamaica and Panama.
