On Sunday, Feb.13, the Los Angeles Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI. However, for some players, clinching the ring and the Vince Lombardi trophy were not the only victories of the day. Rams wide receiver Van Jefferson, for example, did not only become a Super Bowl champion, he also became a father to a new baby boy.

His wife Samaria had to leave in the middle of the game as she started to experience contractions. According to The Athletic, she gave specific instructions to her family and to Rams personnel to refrain from informing Jefferson that she had gone into labor until the game was over.

According to various reports, the Rams player quickly left after the game, grabbed his daughter, rushed to the dressing room, and later went to join Samaria at the hospital. Hours later, Jefferson shared a photo of his new-born son on his Instagram stories.

Speaking on The Adam Schefter Podcast, Jefferson said he and his wife named their son “Champ”, which is fitting given that his wife gave birth on the same night the Rams won the Super Bowl.

They were considering naming their child Wynn or Miles, but decided that Champ was more appropriate.

“We looked it up and ‘Champ’ is like a warrior and my wife is a warrior like what she did throughout this whole week of Super Bowl, the week of Super Bowl being so crazy. He’s a champ, and she’s a warrior. So Champ Curtis Jefferson. That’s the name we got,” said the wide receiver.

Jefferson unable to reach hospital in time for birth

After the end of the game, the player rushed to the hospital. Jefferson told Schefter that heavy traffic prevented him from being there with his wife in time for his son’s birth, so he had to watch Samaria go through the experience over FaceTime.
