USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter worried about goalkeeper situation

There are only three games left in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying, with three teams to advance automatically to Qatar 2022 and one to go into an inter-confederation play-off. The round robin tournament will resume in late March and the United States men’s national team have three tough matchups ahead.

The USMNT will face Mexico on 24 March at the Azteca Stadium, three days later they will return home to host Panama and on 30 March they will go on the road again to play against Costa Rica. All three teams are fighting for a top-four finish, so this is a crucial international window for the United States and they need their best players available.

Goalkeepers dealing with injuries

USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter will not be able to call on Weston McKennie, who suffered a foot injury with Juventus and will be out for at least two months, and Gio Reyna is a doubt because he is recovering from an injury. If that was not enough, the USMNT boss is worried about the situation that Zack Steffen and Matt Turner are dealing with.

Steffen has been the number-one option since Berhalter took the job, but he has been dealing with injuries in the past few months. This week the Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola, left the USMNT goalkeeper out of the roster ahead of the FA Cup match against Peterborough due to a shoulder injury.

Meanwhile, Turner, who has served as the second option for Berhalter, missed New England Revolution's 2022 MLS season opener against Portland Timbers. The Revs confirmed that the goalkeeper has an undisclosed foot injury and he has not been an active participant in training.

Both recovery timelines are unknown, with the Mexico game scheduled in four weeks. If both goalkeepers are not available for that game, it is expected that New York City FC's Sean Johnson will make his debut in World Cup qualifying with the United States against their biggest rival, ‘El Tri.’
