Baseball fans are in for a treat this weekend with the annual Shriners Hospitals for Children's College Classic in Houston hosting some of the nation’s powerhouse collegiate programs. In its 22 year history, the Shriners Classic has played host to a legion of MLB players and the tournament typically attracts around 100 professional scouts representing all 30 Major League teams.

Hosted by the Astros Foundation, the six-team tournament is generally seen to mark the start of the baseball season in Texas. This year’s edition will be without the historical hosts, the Houston Cougars and the Rice Owls, as the tournament maintains its shift toward themed weekends in an effort to increase fan interest. Waco’s Baylor University Bears and Austin’s University of Texas Longhorns will represent the Texas delegation, while the other four invited teams making up the nine-game tournament will be the Louisiana State University Tigers, the University of Oklahoma Sooners, the University of California - Los Angeles Bruins, and the University of Tennessee Volunteers.

For the players, the opportunity to play three games in a Major League ballpark is one to be savoured and really sets this weekend apart. Four of the six teams are in the national Top 25, with Texas ranked number one, LSU ranked seventh, Tennessee ranked 16, and UCLA at 23, leaving Baylor and Oklahoma the only unranked teams in the tournament.

All of the weekend’s nine games will be televised nationwide, with all nine games live on MLB Network. In addition to television coverage, all nine games of the tournament will be streamed on Astros.com, the Astros Twitter, Facebook and YouTube accounts, and the MLB app.

The University of Texas came into the season as the number one team in the country and has gone 9-0 thus far, outscoring their opponents 72-10. This will mark the eighth time in Shriners Children’s College Classic history that the tournament will host the number one team in the country.

A portion of each ticket sale will be donated directly to Shriners Children’s Hospitals.
