Sporting have never advanced past the last-16 stage, with the Portuguese side only making it this far once before, in 2008-09, where they also lost the first leg of the tie 5-0, against Bayern Munich.
Man City and Sporting have only ever met at the Etihad once before. The Citizens won 3-2 in the last-16 of the Europa League but they were knocked out on away goals.
