Carlos Correa to get new offer from Astros
Faced with the prospect of losing one of their hottest players, the Houston Astros are reportedly putting together a new offer in a fresh bid to keep him
While our news-goggles were misted over with the CBA negotiations this off season, it was never completely out of mind that some big-name players were out of contract. They don’t come much bigger than Houston’s Carlos Correa. He is one of the most highly coveted free agents left in the MLB, and a real anchor in that Astros middle infield, and it has been expected that they could not - or would not - meet his financial demands.
But now there seems to be a sign that the Astros are having a change of heart. The organization has made clear that it continues to value Carlos and will still negotiate with the star shortstop to find a way to keep him, and there is reportedly a “buzz” in the Astros clubhouse that maybe, just maybe, Correa could return to Minute Maid.
A firm fan favorite and beloved by his teammates, Correa’s entire big league career has been in Houston since they drafted him first overall in 2012 out of the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy. The Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees have both shown heavy interest in signing him, but with Isiah Kiner-Falefa donning pinstripes from the Rangers, and Andrelton Simmons heading to Chicago, their interest may have waned.
Last week, Correa sold his Houston home, indicating that he clearly didn’t expect to be going back, but with the Astros preparing a new deal for the All-Star shortstop, it seems a realistic option. And the guys in the locker room can’t wait to see what happens.
