On the verge of reaching the 2022 World Cup after a big win over Panama, the USMNT visit fourth-placed Costa Rica in the final round of CONCACAF qualifiers on Wednesday.
The United States men’s national team are on the cusp of sealing their World Cup return as they travel to Costa Rica in the final round of CONCACAF qualifiers for Qatar 2022.
After thumping Panama 5-1 on Sunday, with Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic scoring a hat-trick, the USMNT sit second in the group with 25 points, three ahead of the fourth-placed Costa Ricans. The top three qualify automatically, while as it stands Los Ticos would go into an inter-confederation playoff against a team from Oceania in June.
USMNT will qualify if they avoid heaviest defeat since 50s
A win for Costa Rica would take them level on points with the US, but Gregg Berhalter’s men know that their +10 goal-difference advantage means they will reach their first World Cup since 2014 as long as they avoid losing by six goals or more.
The Stars and Stripes may have a terrible away record against Costa Rica in World Cup qualifying - they’ve lost on their last nine visits, going back to 1989 - but they haven’t been beaten by a six-goal margin in a competitive game since 1957.
Costa Rica, who defeated El Salvador 2-1 last time out, could yet qualify automatically even if they win by a smaller margin. However, to leapfrog third-placed Mexico, who are tied with the US on 25 points, they will still require a four-goal swing in the goal-difference column.
