Canelo Álvarez wins the 2021 BWAA Fighter of the Year award

Saúl Canelo Álvarez is having a hard time finding an opponent at his level and has been one of the most dominant names in boxing for some time now. Last year the Mexican fighter became the first undisputed super middleweight world champion and the first Mexican boxer to become an undisputed champion in any weight division in the four-belt era.

Another award for Álvarez

On Wednesday, Canelo was named by the Boxing Writers Association of America the 2021 Fighter of the Year and this is the second time in three years that he wins this award. The contenders to win this award were Nonito Donaire, Stephen Fukton, Tyson Fury, Josh Taylor and Oleksandr Usyk.

This was a special award for Team Canelo because his coach and manager also won their respective awards for the first time in BWAA history. Eddie Reynoso was named the BWAA’s 2021 Manager and Trainer of the year as he has led Canelo to make history in the sport of boxing.

Currently, Canelo is preparing for his upcoming fight against Dmitry Bivol on 7 May and he will be moving up to light-heavyweight for the second time in his career. This event will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada and the winner of this fight could possibly end up in the ring against the winner of Gennady Golovkin and Ryota Murata.
