American Fiction
The great achievement of Cord Jefferson's directorial debut is highlighting and condemning the racism that exists in the literary world.

'American Fiction' heads to the Oscars backed by its win at the Toronto Film Festival, a prize that has, since 2012, consistently secured a nomination for Best Picture. Some of its forerunners even snagged the trophy in the past: 'Slumdog Millionaire', 'The King's Speech', '12 Years a Slave', 'Green Book', and 'Nomadland'. Not too shabby. Cord Jefferson masterfully directs this sharp satire of the literary world where race still matters. A dramatic comedy that's amusing yet tackles the tough issues of racial stereotypes. It will make you think.

American Fiction' is up for five categories, though its only real shot at winning is for adapted screenplay. Jefferson has adeptly transferred to the big screen the novel 'Erasure' (2001) by the renowned American author Percival Everett.

The race for the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar is wide open, and its significant win at the BAFTAs offers a glimmer of hope not to leave the iconic Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles empty-handed. 'Oppenheimer' and 'Barbie' are its main competitors.

Cord Jefferson makes a spectacular directorial debut. He directs with expertise, though he didn't make it among the top five directors. He has earned two well-deserved nominations: adapted screenplay and best picture. He is also one of the producers.

'American Fiction' is anchored by the outstanding performance of Jeffrey Wright, who is nominated for an Oscar for the first time after becoming widely known to the public in the series 'Westworld'. His remarkable performance adds a fuller dimension to the entire movie.

Te is also up for Best Supporting Actor. Sterling K. Brown has put his name in the ring for the first time, just like Jeffrey Wright. Brown shone in the series 'This Is Us' and now competes for an Oscar for the first time.

Orion Pictures, revived in 2018 once more by MGM, is once again vying for the grand prize. This marks its eighth historical nomination, having triumphed four times with 'Amadeus', 'Platoon', 'Dances with Wolves', and 'The Silence of the Lambs'.

t also gave birth to 'Hannah and Her Sisters', 'Terminator', 'Robocop', and 'The Addams Family'. Last year, it made a return to the ceremony with 'Women Talking', nearly thirty years after Jonathan Demme's masterpiece win.

Amazon fully entered the movie scene in 2023 when it began co-directing the Orion production company. For Amazon, this represents its third major success at the Oscars, following six nominations with 'Manchester by the Sea' and then with 'Argentina, 1985'.
