Modern Family became one of the most popular sitcoms of the past decade thanks to its funny, relatable characters and fresh, natural style that often broke the fourth wall. The show also introduced audiences to talented actors we grew up watching: Ed O’Neill, Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter, and Nolan Gould.

But fame was not easy for everyone. Ariel Winter, who played the smart and witty middle child Alex Dunphy, found the early attention overwhelming, especially because of online debates about her body when she was just a teenager.

Ariel Winter’s public scrutiny

In an interview with “Good Morning America” at age 18, Winter described how challenging it was to deal with constant scrutiny and harassment over her developing body.

Walking the red carpet and seeing the photos afterward, with every headline focused on my cleavage instead of my talent, was disheartening,” she said. “No one talked about whether they liked the dress, why I was there, or what I wanted people to notice. It felt really disappointing that today, media still focuses on how people look.”

The decision to have breast reduction surgery

Winter revealed she underwent a breast reduction because her body was developing too quickly, making everyday life physically uncomfortable. “You know, you’re only 12, and your body is changing way too fast,” she said.

The discomfort affected her posture and sleep. “I couldn’t sit up straight. Sleeping was uncomfortable. Sitting was uncomfortable. Walking was uncomfortable,” Winter said.

“Modern Family” star: “I just feel secure”

Some assumed she had the surgery because of public pressure, but Winter clarified her reasons. “That wasn’t why I did it. I don’t care what anyone thinks of me,” she said. She added that the surgery dramatically improved her confidence. “It completely changed how I felt about myself physically and mentally. It gave me confidence that I no longer have to fake. I just feel secure in myself.”

Talking about the surgery scars, Winter said, “It’s funny, I didn’t even notice them. I didn’t think about covering them.” She was shocked when people suggested she hide them, calling that idea ridiculous because they are part of her. “They’re not going anywhere, and I’m fine with that,” she said.

Winter speaks out on gender bias

Winter expressed concern about the intense scrutiny women and girls face, especially in the public eye. “It’s ridiculous that women are so hypersexualized in the industry, and we’re always judged on the red carpet,” she said. She added that it frustrates her that men are not subjected to the same standards. “There’s nothing wrong with them, and it’s really terrible that so many people say we can’t be beautiful with scars,” she said.
