Brendan Fraser crashes screening of ‘The Mummy’, delights and surprises fans

Brendan Fraser delighted fans with a surprise appearance at a screening of his 1999 film ‘The Mummy’ at the Prince Charles Theatre in London. The 54-year-old catapulted to stardom when he co-starred with Rachel Weisz in the film, along with its sequel, ‘The Mummy Returns’.

Having just been nominated for an Oscar for his work in ‘The Whale’, the star showed up at the screening unexpectedly, dressed as his character from the movie, Rick O’Connell.

Fraser wore his character’s classic tan khaki pants, dark brown leather jacket and neck scarf, and soaked in the abundant applause from his fans.

“I am proud to stand before you tonight,” said Fraser as the crowd roared.

“Thank you, Friday night in Leicester Square. I first started seeing films right across the street, I saw Star Wars in 1977 and it changed my life, made me want to star in movies.”

Fraser confessed to the crowd that he had no idea what kind of movie ‘The Mummy’ was when they started shooting.

“We didn’t know if it was a drama, a comedy, a horror movie, straight action, all of the above,” Fraser declared. “No idea, until it tested in front of British audiences, thank you for that.”

Fraser has received praise for his work in ‘The Whale’. The film sees the 54-year-old play a reclusive English teacher who has a fractured relationship with his daughter, and it’s helped put him back on the map of Hollywood stars.

He has been nominated for Best Actor at this year’s Oscar Awards, the Golden Globes, and the BAFTA awards, and has already won the same category at the Critics Choice Awards.

The film marks a major comeback for Fraser, who fell out of the limelight due to a variety of reasons, which included multiple surgeries.

Now back as a leading name, Fraser said that he would be up for making another Mummy sequel.

“It’s kind of an open-ended question for some time now. I’m not opposed to it, I don’t know an actor who doesn’t want a job,” the actor told Peter Hammond in an interview with Deadline.

“I don’t think I’ve been this famous and unsalaried at the same time in my professional life so sign me up.”
