From first ever Miss Universe to global icon: The remarkable life of Armi Kuusela

Tuntematon

In 1952, Armi Kuusela, a 17-year-old from Finland, became the first woman to ever wear the Miss Universe crown. Her win, celebrated across the world, not only placed her in the spotlight but also helped launch a global phenomenon that has remained an international spectacle for over seven decades and continues even as Kuusela reached 90 this past summer. Now, as the Miss Universe pageant approaches its 73rd year, we look back at Kuusela’s trailblazing journey and how her life changed after that historic win.

The inaugural Miss Universe pageant was held on June 28, 1952, in Long Beach, California, where contestants from 30 countries gathered to compete. Representing Finland, Kuusela stood out among her peers, ultimately capturing the hearts of judges and the audience alike. She won against notable competitors, including Elza Edsman of Hawaii (who took second place), Ntaizy Mavraki from Greece (third), and Judy Dan from Hong Kong (fourth).

A life transformed: From Beauty Queen to international icon

After her crowning moment, Kuusela’s life took an unexpected turn. She quickly became a global ambassador of beauty and grace, with numerous international appearances that elevated her status as a cultural icon. Yet, unlike many pageant winners who pursue careers in entertainment, Kuusela chose a different path. In 1953, she shocked the world by giving up her title just a year after winning to marry Filipino businessman Virgilio Hilario, whom she met during a diplomatic tour in Japan. Her decision to marry for love rather than fame or career advancement made headlines worldwide, showcasing her independence and willingness to follow her heart.

Relocating to the Philippines, Kuusela embraced a life far removed from pageant glamor. She and Hilario had five children together, and Kuusela dedicated herself to family and philanthropy. She became deeply involved in social work, participating in charitable organizations in both Finland and the Philippines. Her charitable focus, especially on children’s welfare, resonated with the same grace and kindness that had earned her the Miss Universe title.

Enduring influence on the Miss Universe legacy

Kuusela’s unique life path has left an indelible mark on the Miss Universe pageant. She demonstrated that beauty queens could be influential, complex figures beyond their appearances. Her choice to step away from the limelight to prioritize family and humanitarian work set a precedent for later pageant winners, many of whom would also use their platforms to support social causes.

As Miss Universe celebrates its 73rd year, Kuusela’s legacy continues to inspire. Today, the competition promotes empowerment and community impact, values Kuusela exemplified long before they became hallmarks of the pageant.

Colombia’s contender for Miss Universe 2024

On Saturday, November 16, Mexico City will host the Miss Universe 2024 competition, bringing together representatives from across the globe.

Colombia’s flag-bearer in this year’s pageant is 30-year-old Daniela Toloza, a fashion designer and business management specialist. Known for her advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community and commitment to children’s welfare, Toloza has a multifaceted background, with degrees in public relations and advertising.

Her journey to the international stage began with her victory as Miss Valle in the national Miss Colombia competition on June 2. Impressing judges with her runway presence and eloquence, Toloza is seen as a strong contender with the potential to bring Colombia another Miss Universe title, following the legacy of Camila Avella, last year’s Miss Colombia.
