After nine months of silence, Gerard Piqué finally speaks out about his highly publicized breakup with Colombian singer Shakira. The couple who share two sons, Sasha and Milan announced their split in June last year.

Since their split, it was alleged that Piqué had been cheating on Shakira with another woman who has since been revealed as Piqué's current girlfriend Clara Chia Marti, who is a 24-year-old public relations student and model.

Since their split theories have arisen that Shakira found out about the affair after returning home from her tour to find that her strawberry jam was eaten, noting that Piqué and her family do not like strawberry jam.

Breaking his silence

However, Pique has yet to address these claims of infidelity and up until recently hasn’t addressed the split at all publicly. On Sunday, the retired soccer player opened up to El País, a Spanish news outlet about his priorities post-breakup.

“Everyone has their responsibility to do what’s best for their kids,” he said, translated from Spanish to English.

“It’s about protecting them,” he added. “That’s the job of all parents with their kids. That’s what I’m focused on and that’s my role as a father.”

Piqué also spoke about his reputation following the split, claiming he feels “faithful to himself” and is “very happy” with his life now.

“I keep doing what I want,” Piqué claims.

“The day I die, I will look back and hope I have always done what I wanted. I want to be faithful to myself.”

He continued, “I’m not going to spend money cleaning up my image. There have been changes in my life and I have known how to preserve happiness.”

What Shakira has said

Shakira and Piqué initially split in June and Shakira first spoke publicly about the breakup later in September. In an Elle interview, she called the process “incredibly difficult’ on their children.

“Regardless of how things ended or how Gerard and I feel about each other as ex-partners, he is the father of my children,” she explained at the time.

She continued, “We have a job to do for these two incredible boys, and I have faith that we will figure out what is best for their future, their own dreams in life, and what is a fair solution for everyone involved.”
