Goodbye to Ozzy Osbourne: this was the nickname the artist earned for his music, style and artistic career
The Black Sabbath singer has passed away at the age of 76.

Ozzy Osbourne has died at the age of 76. After a career at the very top of the world of entertainment, the Black Sabbath singer has said goodbye in the most perfect way possible. It was just weeks ago when he sat in front of an adoring crowd in Birmingham for what was his final farewell, performing the hit songs that made him a household name across the world.
Ozzy was a maverick in every sense of the word. He was a pioneer in heavy metal music and a history maker in the world of television, starring in The Osbournes and turning TV on its head with the reality show that captivated millions for years.
But music was his true home. The vocalist of Black Sabbath, he brought heavy metal to the main stages and mainstream airwaves, with his unique look shocking all in the darkest way possible. It was here that he earned his nickname: The Prince of Darkness.
It was clearly a name he liked, as he was known to refer to himself in that way many times in public, including the hilarious video below. Swearing warning, of course, he’s Ozzy Osbourne.

The origins of the name were explained by Ozzy himself. In a 2016 interview with NME, Osbourne said that Black Sabbath’s 1970 song “Black Sabbath” was the “scariest song ever written”, and fans were scared at the creepy opening chords.
“They thought we were Satan’s fucking friends or something,” Osbourne said. ”That’s when the whole Prince of Darkness shit started. When people get excited about Halloween coming around each year, all I think is, ‘Well, we used to have Halloween every fucking night.’”

He also discussed it with the Broward New Times, years earlier, saying “It’s a name. I didn’t wake up one morning and go, ‘You know what, I’m going to call myself...’ It started as a joke name really,” he reasoned. “I’m okay with it, you know? You know, it’s better than being called an asshole.”
