Goodbye USA: Richard Gere reveals why he left his mansion to move to this country
The American actor, famous for his roles in the likes of Pretty Woman and American Gigalo, has abandoned the US.

Talking about Richard Gere means talking about one of the greatest actors of all time, but also about a man deeply committed to various social causes. The star of films such as Pretty Woman, Days of Heaven, and American Gigolo is also a passionate activist. He founded The Gere Foundation, serves as chairman of the board of the International Campaign for Tibet, and collaborates with organizations like Open Arms and Survival International.
Why did Richard Gere move to Spain?
This activism took on new dimensions when he met his wife, Alejandra Silva – now Alejandra Gere – with whom he has undertaken projects such as Sierra a Mar, a sustainability initiative in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. For the past seven years, Alejandra and Richard have lived in the United States with their children. However, the family has recently relocated to Spain to continue supporting various social causes.

The Geres' new life in Madrid
The couple has chosen Madrid as their new home. Specifically, they have settled in La Moraleja, in a house spanning over 8,600 square feet, equipped with every luxury imaginable. It’s a perfect environment where their young children can enjoy their day-to-day lives alongside them.
Regarding the move, the actor commented a few months ago, “I owed it to my wife,” adding, “The kids are happy, and there’s nothing better than that.” The actor has fully embraced life in Spain, even taking part in local traditions, such as enjoying chocolate con churros at Christmas with Alejandra.
More about the reasons to leave America
Several factors explain why Alejandra and Richard decided to leave the United States for Madrid. The most obvious is that Alejandra is Spanish, and the couple had already spent a significant amount of time in Gere’s home country. But beyond that, the primary reason for their move is their desire to support the nonprofit organization Hogar Sí, which works to ensure that no one is left living on the streets.
Alejandra herself explained to Elle magazine their shared mission to help eradicate homelessness in Spain: “Our goal is that, within five years, no one will sleep on the streets.” Without a doubt, this is yet another example of the couple’s commitment to social causes.
While this marks the first time Richard Gere has lived outside the United States, the move hasn’t appeared to have been a challenge for the actor, whose ultimate dedication remains clear: helping make the world a better place.
