Much of the pre-ceremony speculation and predictions focus on the “main” categories, particularly Best Picture, Best Directing, Best Actor and Best Actress.

But while the leading men and women will steal much of the attention, we can’t forget about those supporting actors and actresses who are often just as important in determining whether their movie is a success or not.

2025 Oscars: Best Supporting Actor nominees

  • Yura Borisov - "Anora"
  • Kieran Culkin - "A Real Pain"
  • Edward Norton - "A Complete Unknown"
  • Guy Pearce - "The Brutalist"
  • Jeremy Strong - "The Apprentice"

In the male category (i.e. Best Supporting Actor), Edward Norton is the man who most knows what it’s like to (almost) win an Oscar.

Edward Norton at the Oscars

Norton has received his fourth Oscars nomination for his portrayal of Pete Seeger in “A Complete Unknown,” a biographical musical drama about Bob Dylan, played by Timothée Chalamet, who is one of the Best Actor contenders.

The 55-year-old was previously up for Best Supporting Actor on two occasions, for “Primal Fear” (1997) and “Birdman” (2015), and also for Best Actor for “American History X” (1999).

Norton, however, has yet to take home a statuette.

A first-time Oscar winner is guaranteed in the Best Supporting Actor category, with Borisov, Culkin, Pearce and Strong having all received their first Academy Awards nominations this year.
