Update:

Half a century since she made her film debut in A Matter of Time, Isabella Rossellini is finally in the running for an Academy Award.

A first-time nominee at 72, Rossellini is up for Best Supporting Actress at this weekend’s Oscars, for her role as the “all-seeing” Sister Agnes in Edward Berger’s Conclave - a thriller that has accrued eight nominations in all.

A big-screen adaptation of Robert Harris’s 2016 novel, whose story unfolds in the Vatican in the aftermath of the pope’s death, Conclave’s Oscar nods also include Best Picture, and Best Actor for Rossellini’s co-star Ralph Fiennes.

“I wish they were here”

Reacting to her Best Supporting Actress nomination last month, Rossellini paid tribute to her parents, the film legends Roberto Rossellini and Ingrid Bergman.

I wish they were here to know this news,” the Italian said in a video message. “But maybe they know, because they might be up there, knowing.”

Rossellini, who has said she cried when she learned of her nomination, also reserved a special mention for David Lynch, her director in her breakout role in 1986’s Blue Velvet.

Rossellini described working with Lynch, who died in January, as “pivotal to my understanding of the art of acting”.

Who is the favorite to win Best Supporting Actress?

In addition to Oscars recognition, Rossellini’s turn in Conclave earned her supporting actress nominations at this year’s Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice Awards and BAFTAs. At all three of these prize ceremonies, however, she was beaten by Emilia Pérez star Zoe Saldaña.

Having also triumphed at the Screen Actors Guild Awards last weekend, Saldaña is the clear favorite for victory at the Oscars. Indeed, she has been described by critics as looking “nearly unbeatable” and “almost guaranteed” to win.

While Saldaña has, by a distance, the shortest betting odds of the five Best Supporting Actress nominees, Rossellini is an apparent outsider for the Oscar. Wicked’s Ariana Grande is rated as the bookmakers’ second favorite.
