Adrien Brody wins the Oscar for Best Actor 2025 for ‘The Brutalist’

Only 10 actors in Hollywood history have hoisted more than one statuette. Now, Brody adds his name to that exclusive list. Will he be inspired to chase Daniel Day-Lewis’s record of three?

Update:

The 2025 Oscars held significant weight for Adrien Brody. A win would usher him into one of Hollywood’s most exclusive clubs. A loss, especially to Timothée Chalamet, would have meant relinquishing his title as the youngest Best Actor winner in history. Chalamet recently turned 29, while Brody was two months shy of 30 when he clinched his first Oscar in 2003 for ‘The Pianist.’ Fortunately for Brody, the coin fell his way. At 51, the New Yorker has once again captivated the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles with his performance in ‘The Brutalist.’

In ‘The Brutalist’, Brody showcases unparalleled acting prowess. He anchors the most grandiose film of this year’s Oscars, exhibiting a unique gift for portraying sensitive, tormented characters. This time, he embodies László Tóth, a Bulgarian architect who, after enduring Nazi oppression and surviving World War II, emigrates to the United States. Through Tóth’s intimate journey, Brody confronts the perpetually elusive American Dream and the harsh realities faced by newcomers to a foreign land: drugs, pride, family, solitude. These profound themes are expressed through an architectural style emphasizing light and massive concrete structures.

Since ‘The Pianist,’ Brody hadn’t received another nomination until his collaboration with Brady Corbet. However, that doesn’t mean he hasn’t enjoyed himself over the years. He’s appeared in blockbusters like ‘King Kong’ and ‘Predators’; collaborated with friends such as Wes Anderson on projects like ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ and ‘The French Dispatch’; delivered memorable roles like Salvador Dalí in ‘Midnight in Paris’; and made notable appearances in successful series like ‘Peaky Blinders’ and ‘Succession.’ With this second statuette, Brody joins the exclusive list of actors who’ve won two Oscars. Will he be tempted to pursue Daniel Day-Lewis, the only actor with three?
