Update:

Zoe Saldaña is no stranger to awards ceremonies, but tonight at the 97th Academy Awards, she landed her first Oscar, winning Best Supporting Actress for her role in Emilia Pérez.

Out of the five nominees for this year’s Best Supporting Actress Oscar, the 46-year-old was likely the one who had probably attended the most galas over the years. Of the six highest-grossing films of all time, she had roles in four of them (Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Avengers: Endgame).

The New Jersey-born actress had won practically every award there is to win in the film industry - Baftas, Golden Globes, a Screen Actors Guild Award... and yet she only gained her first Academy Awards nomination this year.

Zoe Saldaña‘s first Oscar nomination

Curiously, all of the artists who were up for this year’s Best Supporting Actress were first-time Oscar nominees - apart from Felicity Jones, who was in the shortlist a decade ago for her role in The Theory of Everything.

Saldaña won critics over for her sizzling performance as Rita Mora Castro, a Spanish-speaking lawyer who gets caught up with a drug lord in Jacques Audiard’s highly original musical Emilia Pérez.

“It’s a film with a story that’s unlike anything we’ve seen,” Saldaña says when asked to describe Emilia Pérez. “All I want to say to people, if they are curious to see it, it is a story about four women, on their journey to find their most authentic selves. These women are completely diverse from each other and truly complex characters - but deserving of love nonetheless. It’s a provocative and very bold story that Jacques Audiard wrote and directed. I’m just so very proud to be a part of it“.

Who else was up for the Best Supporting Actress Award at the 97th Academy Awards?

The oddsmakers were spot on, making Saldaña favorite to win but she was up against tough competition - from Monica Barbaro for her portrayal of Joan Baez in A Complete Unknown and Isabella Rossellini, who delivered a brief but electrifying performance in Conclave.

97th Academy Awards Best Supporting Actress nominees

  • Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez)
  • Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown)
  • Ariana Grande (Wicked)
  • Felicity Jones (The Brutalist)
  • Isabella Rossellini (Conclave)

Zoe made sure her husband Marco was there to watch. He was seen rushing back to his seat after a trip to the bathroom just as she took to the stage to pick up the Critics’ Choice Award in Santa Barbara earlier this month.

“I think at the Oscars, no drinks past noon!” she laughs.
