I’m Just Ken: lyrics and meaning of Ryan Gosling’s song lyrics in ‘Barbie’
You heard him in the cinema, you have likely heard him again since then, but what was really going on in that heartfelt, insecure song?
There are some who argue that Ryan Gosling’s Ken upstaged the lead character in the Barbie movie, especially with his emotional performance of the song “I’m Just Ken”. And with the retro-fitted video of the track, and the various spin-offs, getting millions upon millions of views on YouTube, the visual vibe has turned to more intrigue over the lyrics that were chosen.
It wasn’t just about Ryan and his fellow ‘Kens’ treating us to an explosion of faux dance routines, there was a little more plastic-layered depth to it, and we thought we’d take a look.
I’m Just Ken: the lyrics
I’m Just Ken: the meanings behind the lyrics
Now that you’ve assessed the lyrics, with no bare-chested Gosling or bright plastic scenery taking away your focus, you’ve likely started to piece together for yourself some of the meaning behind it. But let’s pick out a few of the early key lines which set the scene.
“Doesn’t seem to matter what I do, I’m always number two”
What is Ken’s purpose in life? The doll itself was introduced just to provide Barbie with a partner and, movie-Ken appears to appreciate this more than anyone else, and certainly more than her. He may get to “beach” but he knows he only exists to get the attention and approval of the woman who has so many more opportunities in life. Poor Ken.
“I have feelings that I can’t explain, Drivin’ me insane”
In the world that Ken inhabits, there are no words for him to express his clear desires for Barbie. There is little in terms of sexual contact there but he knows deep inside that there is something, but what?
“All my life, been so polite, But I’ll sleep alone tonight”
You remember the iconic monologue from by the real world’s America Ferrera that ends with: “I’m just so tired of watching myself and every single other woman tie herself into knots so that people will like us. And if all of that is also true for a doll just representing women, then I don’t even know.” Well, it feels that Ken was just portraying that restrictive politeness that his world tied him down with. And while ‘sleeping with someone’ in our own society tends to refer to a sexual encounter, Ken was clearly confused by the concept after earlier suggesting he spent the night with Barbie but not really knowing why. You can feel his frustration and this is what Gerwig was attempting to explain.
Oscar time for “I’m Just Ken”
The behind-the-scenes looks at the memorable dance scene in the Barbie movie revealed Gosling’s dedication, turning a cheesy routine into a potentially Oscar-winning performance. Yes, Ryan will be performing at Sunday’s glitzy event.
Director Greta Gerwig admitted she was both amused and impressed by Gosling’s commitment. She insisted at casting that he would be the one leading the Kens and had no regrets.
The scene’s creation involved significant effort, with choreographers, musicians like Slash and Josh Freese, and a talented supporting cast including Simu Liu and Ncuti Gatwa. Gerwig believes Gosling’s portrayal uniquely captured the character’s plight, and oh what a lot of fun they had pulling it all together.
