The ‘Hamilton’ creator has set her sights on a new project.
Lin‑Manuel Miranda, the creator of Hamilton and In the Heights, is set to develop a film that tells the remarkable story of the Molina brothers, three siblings from Puerto Rico who each carved out distinguished careers as catchers in Major League Baseball.
The film, still in early stages of development with Disney and other producers, takes inspiration from Bengie Molina’s autobiographical work on his family.
The book recounts how the brothers were raised with a love for baseball and how their father’s influence shaped their path to the major leagues.
Juicy details such as casting and release timing have not been revealed, yet industry sources appear to have confirmed that Miranda is deeply involved and that the story will centre on the Molinas’ journey from a small Puerto Rican town to the pinnacles of the elite level of sport.
Born and raised in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico, Bengie, José and Yadier Molina share a rare story in baseball history: all three reached the big leagues as catchers and each won at least one World Series ring during their careers.
Bengie and José first tasted championship success with the Anaheim Angels in 2002, while José later added a second title with the Yankees. Yadier, the youngest of the trio, enjoyed a 19‑year career with the St. Louis Cardinals and earned multiple Gold Glove awards, Platinum Gloves and two World Series victories before retiring.
Miranda has spoken about the personal significance of the project, noting connections between his own family’s roots and those of the Molinas. His father’s family comes from the same Puerto Rican municipality: “Vega Alta is home to like an appalling number of Major League Baseball players, not just the Molina brothers, Bernie Williams, it’s really incredible. So to be able to honour that in the movie is something we’re really actively trying to do,” Miranda said. “We claim (the brothers), we claim them for Vega Alta.”
