Madonna, the Queen of Pop, and the physical change she had to make to continue performing: “I have no cartilage”

Madonna has revealed the damage done to one of her knees by years of dancing in high heels, an injury that has completely changed her routine.

Maintaining a place at the pinnacle of music for more than four decades comes at a cost, and Madonna knows that better than anyone. Widely regarded as one of the biggest pop stars of all time, the American icon is still taking the stage at 67 years old, although she can no longer perform the way she once did. Years of concerts, rehearsals, and relentless physical demands have ultimately taken a toll on her body.

The singer herself has revealed that she is dealing with significant wear and tear in one of her knees, to the point that she has completely lost the cartilage in the joint. “I have no cartilage in it, thanks to dancing for so long in high heels and running on pavement and doing Ashtanga yoga,” she told Interview magazine in June. The damage is irreversible and forced her to completely rethink her fitness regimen in order to continue performing and sustaining her career.

Until recently, Madonna maintained an intense training schedule that included cardio workouts, trampoline sessions, and long hours of dance rehearsals. However, as the condition of the joint worsened, continuing that routine became impossible. Since then, she has replaced those workouts with lower-impact alternatives such as stationary cycling, the VersaClimber exercise machine, and modified training circuits that allow her to stay in shape without placing additional strain on her knee.

An injury that has changed Madonna’s life

The effects of the condition have also carried over to the stage. During her Madame X Tour, the singer was forced to postpone and even cancel several performances on doctors’ advice. At the time, she explained that she needed several days to recover from the pain and admitted that accepting those breaks was one of the most difficult decisions of her career, even if it was also one of the most necessary.

To keep the discomfort under control, Madonna has also incorporated a range of recovery treatments into her daily routine, including ice baths and other therapies designed to reduce pain and aid recovery. The goal is not to return to the punishing workouts of the past, but rather to preserve enough mobility to continue performing live without further compromising her physical well-being.

The Queen of Pop’s candid admission shines a light on the lesser-known side of a career defined by discipline, dedication, and extraordinary demands. After spending decades reshaping the music industry, Madonna now faces a new challenge: adapting to the limitations of a permanent injury without giving up the passion that ultimately made her a legend.
