Margot Robbie on “red flag” warning over men who idolize this movie of hers

The actress believes that many men, including an old flatmate, came to a “wrong conclusion” about the iconic film.

Margot Robbie, the Australian actor who has just premiered Wuthering Heights alongside Jacob Elordi, has made it clear that those who idolize the movie that launched her to global fame, The Wolf of Wall Street, have drawn the wrong lesson. She agrees that men obsessed with Martin Scorsese’s celebrated film starring Leonardo DiCaprio are a “massive red flag,” a term used to describe toxic or unacceptable behavior, aligning herself with a listener on the BBC program All Day Breakfast with Greg James.

Although Robbie had previously appeared in the romantic comedy About Time and in popular TV series such as Neighbours and Pan Am, her first major international breakthrough came with Martin Scorsese’s 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and nominated for five Academy Awards.

In the acclaimed biopic based on the life of Jordan Belfort, which chronicles the rise and fall of the notorious stockbroker, Robbie played Naomi Lapaglia, Belfort’s second wife. “Any man who is obsessed with The Wolf of Wall Street is a giant red flag,” said Abbie, a listener to the BBC program Robbie recently joined to promote Wuthering Heights.

“My old roommate used to listen to Jordan Belfort’s speech from the movie on his way to work,” Robbie replied. “He worked in finance and would listen to it to pump himself up before going in. I’d say to him, ‘I think you missed the point of the movie. I don’t think you’re supposed to follow in this guy’s footsteps.’ That’s the wrong takeaway,” she explained.

“I’ve met a lot of men who took the wrong message. They think, ‘Yeah, I want to make a ton of money,’” the listener added. “You’re not wrong, Abbie. You’re not wrong,” Robbie concluded.

The Wolf of Wall Street received five Oscar nominations – including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor – but ultimately won none.

As for Robbie, she had to wait several more years for her first Academy Award nomination, which came in 2018 for I, Tonya. Her second followed in 2020 for Bombshell. In 2020 she received a third nomination for Barbie, this time for Best Picture, as she served as both producer and star.
