Meghan Markle wrote to King Charles over concerns about unconscious bias in royal family

A recent report revealed that the Duchess of Sussex wrote to King Charles about her racial concerns.

Update:
Meghan Markle wrote to King Charles over concerns about unconscious bias in royal family

According to a recent report, Meghan Markle had written a letter to her father-in-law, King Charles, expressing concerns over unconscious bias within the Royal Family.

The correspondence, according to The Telegraph, was reportedly sent shortly after Markle and Prince Harry sat down for an exclusive interview with Oprah Winfrey back in 2021.

During the interview, Markle claimed that there were “concerns and conversations about how dark [Archie’s] skin might be when he’s born.”

It was allegedly sent in response to a letter Markle had received from King Charles – the then Prince of Wales – where he expressed sorrow over tension within the family.

The report claimed that Markle didn’t intend to accuse the royal family of racism, but wanted to openly discuss unconscious bias.

Prince Harry discusses the Oprah interview

While promoting his memoir ‘Spare,’ Prince Harry told ITV’s Tom Bradby that the accusations of racism came from the British press.

“The British press said that, right?” he said. “Did Meghan ever mention ‘they’re racists?’”

When asked about the comments made on Archie’s skin tone, the Duke of Sussex explained it as unconscious bias.

“The difference between racism and unconscious bias… the two things are different,” he said.

“Once it’s been acknowledged or pointed out to you as an individual, otherwise an institution, that you have unconscious bias, you, therefore, have an opportunity to learn and grow from that… otherwise, unconscious bias then moves into the category of racism.”

The Duchess of Sussex will not be at the coronation

With King Charles’ coronation on May 6 quickly approaching, the Duchess of Sussex has since announced that she will not be in attendance. Rather, Markle will stay at the couple’s home in California to celebrate Archie’s birthday, which just so happens to be on the same day.

“Meghan wants to be there to support her father-in-law, but at the same time, the scrutiny she receives outweighs the support,” a source told People. “There’s always going to be that other side challenging their reasoning, and who wants to put themselves in that position?”

Prince Harry will be in attendance, however, it’s reported that the Duke of Sussex will fly back to California to be with his wife and kids that evening.
